Oral health importance shouldn't slack in summer months

Summer can be a time for breaks, relaxing and fun, but it doesn't need to be a time for letting your oral health slip up, according to the staff at Soddy Daisy Smiles.

"Staying on your normal dental routine, even on vacation, is so important," said Dr. Mandy Shearer.

Bedtimes can go out the window for kids due to firework shows or backyard campouts, and it can be tempting to skip the evening tooth-brushing and just jump straight into bed, but it's crucial that you don't.

photo Drs. Robert and Mandy Shearer at Soddy Daisy Smiles urge patients to avoid the summer slump when it comes to oral health.

"If you think about it, most of us are enjoying more treats from campfire s'mores to popsicles on those hot days," Dr. Robert said. "With the extra sugar intake, it's even more important to stay on top of your brushing and flossing routine."

Dr. Mandy added that patients should continue brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing at least once a day. Brushing calendars and apps on your phone can be helpful reminders to keep you on track if you're traveling a lot during the summer or breaking your normal routine at home in any way.

Another tip that's helpful is to say no to too many sugar drinks and snacks.

"While you need to stay more hydrated during the summer months and it can be easy to grab the energy or sports drink for electrolytes, make sure you dilute them with water if it's a must, or if possible just stick with upping your water intake to begin with," Dr. Mandy said.

Having ready to eat fruits and veggies on hand will also help with snacking smarter and allow you to avoid the temptation of ice cream and candy when you're on the go.

It's also a good idea to have your dentist's office emergency contact info on hand, especially if you're going to be traveling during the summer.

"A lot of times we can help resolve problems or questions over the phone, and if we can't, we can get you a referral easier than you could on your own," Dr. Robert shared.

Traveling with your toothbrush also comes with a few tips to keep in mind such as making sure to let it air dry, according to Dr. Mandy. If that's not possible, she says that resusable and sealed plastic bags are the next best thing. "It's more important to keep your tooth-brush separated from contact with other objects that could add germs and bacteria that you don't want," Dr. Mandy noted.

Chewing sugarless gum for about 20 minutes after a meal can also help keep cavities at bay while you enjoy
your summer fun, as it gets saliva going which washes away the harmful cavity causing bacteria.

Finally, both Dr. Robert and Dr. Mandy say be sure to keep your scheduled dentist visits, and definitely don't wait until right before school starts to get in and get seen.

"Most dental offices are full then and can't accommodate that short time frame," Dr. Mandy said. "To allow us to best serve you, it's best to be seen early in the summer and then we can also help you make a plan to stay on track with your oral health during your travel plans."
