Party season calls for more than festive fashions. Many young women are also thinking of sophisticated, edgy hairstyles to complement the look.

Most popular are glamorous updos and chic short styles, said stylist Jennifer Ward, owner of Southside Salon on Market Street.

"The holiday trends for this season are going to be everything from sleek and polished updos to big curls and waves," she said. "For the shorter hairstyles, [look for] sleek and sexy to outrageous and edgy."

Sophisticated hair can be long, short, thick, thin, curly or straight, she said, noting that using hair products is the secret to a successful style.

"An edgy style (is) perfect for a holiday night out on the town," Ward said.

Chattanoogan Leah Golden plans to wear her hair in an updo for an upcoming cocktail party. The young mother of two said she'll have to create her own style because she doesn't have time to go to a stylist.

"Curlers and a messy updo it is," she said.

Do-it-yourself styling is simple, Ward said.

"Lots of styles can be done in the salon or at home," she said. "The updo that Chelsey has (in the accompanying photos) was quick and easy. The peacock feather was used to add fun flavor and color and gave it the extra touch it needed for the holidays."

Adding accessories such as a peacock feather and gold stem are ideal accents. It "adds a pop for the holidays," Ward said.

In addition to trend-setting hairstyles, particular hair colors are favored this holiday season, she said.

"Colors for the holidays can vary from platinum blondes to the dark and rich brunettes," she said. "But shiny and healthy hair is a must all season long."
