Special events scheduled at Point Park, Chickamauga battlefields

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend special events that include a living history weekend at Chickamauga Battlefield in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., and programs given by the Civilian Conservation Corps at Point Park on Lookout Mountain.

Saturday and Sunday, living history volunteers representing the 58th North Carolina Regiment will present talks about the life of the common soldier from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Chickamauga Battlefield's Visitors Center.

They also will conduct rifle firing demonstrations at 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Demonstrations will be held Sunday at 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., 1:30 and 2:30 p.m.

The 58th North Carolina regiment, commanded by John H. Kelly, was heavily engaged at Horseshoe Ridge in September 1863 and suffered a 50 percent casualty rate. The regiment went on to fight at Missionary Ridge on Nov. 25, 1863, and also participated in the 1864 Atlanta campaign.

• On Saturday, the Civilian Conservation Corps will conduct programs at Point Park on Lookout Mountain. The first program will occur at 10 a.m. and will be followed by a 1-2 mile hike of trails constructed by CCC workers during the 1930s.

Those planning to hike should bring water, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy walking shoes. The program will be repeated at 4 p.m. with no hike.

Both programs will meet just inside the Point Park entrance gate.

Additionally, authors Ren and Helen Davis will be at the Point Park Visitor Center on Saturday to discuss and sign copies of their book, "Our Mark on This Land: A Guide to the Legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps in America's Parks."

• Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park announces the closing of the Sanders Road picnic area restrooms on Monday. This closure will be in effect for the remainder of the summer and fall seasons. Access to and use of the picnic area will not be affected during this restroom closure.

A handicap-accessible, portable restroom for visitors will be provided until Dec. 1.
