Editor's note: Barry Courter has a 24-year-old son who is a college graduate and a 19-year-old daughter who is a sophomore in college.
Q: Dad, what's the hardest part about having a child away at college?
A: Two things, really. First, the physical separation, of course. Someone who was literally around all the time since birth is now gone. But the other hard part is not being involved and fighting the urge to get involved. Parents like to fix things for their kids and we need to stop and let them handle their own business.
