The Rivers of the World gallery at the Tennessee Aquarium is using something other than a standard electrical outlet to display holiday decorations.

In the gallery you will find brightly-colored fish of all sorts, but you will also come across a brightly-lit tree, flickering from the energy of a notable fish named Miguel Wattson.

Best known as the Tennessee Aquarium's tweeting electric eel (@ElectricMiguel), Miguel Wattson is living up to his last name by providing an illuminating Christmas tree for the aquarium's Holidays Under the Peaks celebration.

"Whenever Miguel discharges electricity, sensors in the water deliver the charge to a set of speakers," explains Joey Turnipseed, the aquarium's audio visual production specialist. "The speakers then convert the discharge into the festively flashing lights."

Miguel has also attracted international attention with the publishing of a story about him by Polish-language weekly newsmagazine Wprost.

The magazine cites a tweet from the aquarium's Miguel Wattson Twitter account and says the "alliance of nature with technology can be admired" in the city.

Other national and international news outlets - the Guardian, NPR, the Washington Post and Fox News, for example - have carried stories about the eel.

Holidays Under the Peaks is presented by the aquarium now until Dec. 24, according to a news release. The celebration features fun and educational programs throughout the aquarium for guests of all ages.
