Q: I am a patient with peripheral arterial disease. Is there an issue with postponing my doctor appointment because of the COVID-19 virus?

A: The South has a high population of people suffering from peripheral arterial disease. The risk for developing PAD rises with age and is highest for those over 50. Smoking is the single greatest risk factor for the development of PAD, along with diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels and heart disease.

This treatable disease can advance rapidly and result in limb amputations. With the advancement of technology and procedures, vascular surgeons can perform interventions in an outpatient setting, easing the risk of hospital exposure for the patient. Be evaluated if you have "leg FLOW" problems: Feeling of pain, Loss of sensation, Open sores that won't heal, or Weakness when walking.

As physicians we recognize patients' fears, but can assure our patients that all safety measures are being taken to protect and keep them safe. Please don't let the fear of your appointment prevent you from being seen, managed or treated. It could potentially save your limb.
