The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga lost its Southern Conference opener 82-63 to Elon on Saturday night.
Elon junior guard Chris Long led the Phoenix with 20 points in their first SoCon win under first-year coach Matt Matheny. Adam Constantine and Drew Spradlin each added 14 points.
Freshman Josh Odem led the Mocs with 20 points. Junior center Jeremy Saffore added 13 points.
The Phoenix (3-6, 1-1) used a second-half spurt to pull away from the Mocs (4-4, 0-1). The Phoenix led by eight before Constantine converted a 3-point play before Long scored 11 straight points in a 14-2 Phoenix run.
The Mocs trailed 38-28 at halftime. They struggled against Elon's zone defenses and failed to take advantage of 2-on-1 situations in the open court. UTC shot 28.6 percent from the floor in the first half compared to 43.3 percent for Elon.
The Mocs will take a week off for exams before playing next Saturday against Mississippi Valley State.
