2 charged in Summerville fraud case

A Summerville, Ga., construction company owner and his mother have been charged with 46 counts each of forgery and making false statements in connection with what authorities call a scheme involving homeowner insurance claims.

Qenkor Construction owner William Benefield, 29, and his mother, Sandra Weaver, 47, were arrested Wednesday, according to a news release from Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine and Chattooga County Sheriff John Everett.

According to the news release, the construction company's sales representatives would approach homeowners about hail-damaged roofs, then file insurance claims under the homeowners' names and place a lien on the property by forging the signature of a notary.

Mr. Oxendine said his investigators made the arrests and that the investigation continues. He said anyone who has had dealings with Qenkor is urged to call 800-656-2298.

Sheriff Everett also urged people who have questions about contractors to call his office.

"This should send a message to all citizens, especially senior citizens, to use caution when dealing with any company or individual offering to do work on their homes," he said.
