Scales replaces outgoing assistant superintendent

Jim Scales announced Friday the appointment of Robert Sharpe to the position of assistant superintendent of campus Operations and Reuben Justice as Interim middle schools director.

Sharpe, who is currently the middle schools director, will replace James Colbert, who is leaving to become superintendent of West Orange Cove Independent School District in Texas. Justice will fill in at Sharpe's position until the end of the year. The appointments are effective Jan. 1, 2011.

"Robert has both middle and high school experience in a variety of schools around the county. He has been at Central Office and shown himself as a tremendous leader of our secondary schools," Scales said. "Reuben is an experienced middle school principal who has served the district as a mentor for middle school principals for the last two years. He brings experience and knowledge to our team and I know he will guide our middle schools through this transition."

Sharpe will also serve as the high school director.

Sharpe began his career in education as a teaching assistant at the Dawn School in 1989. He became a special education teacher and moved to DeKalb County, Ga., in 1992. Sharpe returned to Hamilton County in 1995 as a special education teacher at Red Bank High School. He was promoted to assistant principal at Brainerd High School in 2000 and became principal of Central High School in 2005. In 2008 Sharpe moved to Central Office as one of two secondary schools directors and transitioned into the middle schools director position in 2009.

Sharpe holds a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in special education from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and an education specialist degree in leadership from Lincoln Memorial. He is currently working on his doctorate in education at Trevecca Nazarene University.
