Gary Adkins

Gary M. Adkins, 60, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, in a local hospital.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, he was employed with AAA Window Manufacturing and was of the Christian faith.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Charles F. and Virginia Jean Adkins; sister, Patricia Ann Adkins; grandmother, Edna Jackson; and aunt, Jo Blanks.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah Ann Adkins; son, Aaron Adkins, of Rossville; daughters, Pamela Adkins, of Rossville, and Pauline Albers, of Ringgold; brothers, Larry, Charles, Donald, Jeffrey, Ricky, Steven, Tony and Jack Adkins; granddaughter, Kaylie Albers, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at noon Monday in the South Crest Chapel with Pastor Alan Crider officiating.

Burial will follow in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

Shawn Bowser

Shawn Renee Bowser, 45, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009.

She was a veteran in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army.

She was preceded in death by father, Lawrence E. Kinsey; and sister, Michelle S. Kinsey.

Survivors include mother, Charlie Bell Kinsey; father, Thomas Westfield; daughters, Stephanie McElroth and Tamesha Hughes Ball; brother, Michael A. Betty Jean Burton

Betty Jean Burton, 77, of Chattanooga, died Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, in a local hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and a longtime employee of the T.H. Payne Co. Mrs. Burton was a member of Catoosa Baptist Tabernacle.

Mrs. Burton was preceded in death by her parents, John Wesley and Maude Luella Green Wilbanks; and a son, Gilbert Rue.

Survivors are her husband, Paul Burton; children, Michael Rue, Canton, Ga., Gary Rue and Larry Rue, of Fort Worth Texas, Terri Lonas, of Cleveland, Tenn.; brother, Paul W. Wilbanks; sister, June Blakley; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Carolyn Ann Byars, of Chattanooga, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at a local hospital.

She was a former employee of the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

She was preceded in death by mother, Helen Byars; sister, Diane Jenkins; brother, Harrison Byars Jr.

Survivors include daughter, Lesa (Robert) Russell, of Chattanooga; two sons, Dennis (Kim) Rawlings, of Chattanooga, Stacy (Beverly) Byars, Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Denise Rawlings, Sammy McDaniel, LaQuita Linder and Isaiah Byars; one great-grandchild, Jay'Vion Linder; five sisters, Lucille Welch, Cincinnati, Ohio, Juliette Moore, Laura Harris, Linda Byars and Joyce Slaughter, all of Chattanooga; a host nephews, nieces and friends.

Robert Cavitt

Robert Harold "Bobby" Cavitt Jr., 30, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at his home.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Cavitt Sr.; and brother, Eric Cavitt.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle Cavitt; son, Lane Robert Cavitt; stepson, Montana Ritchie; daughter, Shayli Brooke Cavitt; stepdaughter, Jaden Ritchie; mother, Charlene Sission; brothers, Billy Glenn Stewart, Richard Lee Cavitt; sisters, Angelina Stewart Sweeney, Stephanie Cavitt.

Sylvia Couch

Sylvia Lucinda Couch, 73, of Chattanooga, went to be with the Lord Jesus on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wiley Cooper and Edna Cooper; sisters, Nancy Whittemore, Jacqueline Franklin, Virginia Jo Smith, all of Chattanooga.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, James Couch Sr.; sons, James (Judy) Couch Jr., of Monticello, Ga., Garry (Glenda) Couch, of Harrison; daughter, Cynthia (Steve) Phy, of Ringgold, Ga.; and her brother, Richard (Kathy) Cooper, of Sequatchie, Tenn.; also, sisters and brothers, Nancy and Gay Robertson, Annie Mathis, Kathryn and Jess Long, Snookie and James Stephens, Jean Sherrill, and David and Connie Couch; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Mike and Dot Partain and Robert Daughtrey.

Special thanks for the tender love and care given to our family by Hospice of Chattanooga. So many friends have blessed us with their visits, calls and prayers, and we are forever grateful.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Bryan Couch, Jason Phy, Jeremy Phy, Jack Couch, Daniel Couch, Wayland Couch with love they will carry their Mamaw to her final resting place.

Rosa Davis

Rosa Davis, of Chattanooga, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, one week after celebrating her 96th birthday at the Health Center at Standifer Place.

She was a retired schoolteacher and church musician.

She was preceded in death by her husband, son, parents, sisters and brothers.

She is survived by a host of other relatives and friends.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 3, 2010, at New Life Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2099 E. Main St.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Steven Davis

Steven Eugene Davis, 50, of Chattanooga, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009.

He was a lifetime member of Oakwood Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clarence and Myrtle Davis, and Claude and Sadie Springfield.

He is survived by his father and mother, Clyde and Barbara Davis; one brother, Michael Allen Davis; two sisters, Karen Denise Lee and Linda Kay Davis; one niece, Alexis Lee; one nephew, Joshua Lee.

Funeral service will be held at graveside at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, in Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Lloyd Harvill officiating.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until noon on Monday at the funeral home.

Julie Feagans

Julie Pogue Feagans, 46, passed from this life peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, surrounded by her loving family.

She had courageously battled cancer for almost four years. She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, having attended St. Nicholas and Boyd-Buchanan Schools before graduating from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1985 with a B.S. degree in education.

Julie taught school in the Hamilton County Department of Education at Ridgedale Elementary, Lookout Valley Elementary, and Westview Elementary. She then taught kindergarten at St. Nicholas School until her retirement in 2006. She held membership in the Nancy Ward Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Julie was an outstanding wife and mother, always in attendance at her sons sporting events, programs, recitals, etc. She and her husband, Mark, made quite a team in numerous sports, him coaching and she being the "team Mom."

She was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Stone Pogue; and grandparents, Dr. Clyde and Pearl Stone, and Luke and Mollie Pogue.

Julie is survived by her husband, D. Mark Feagans; sons, Blake Cameron Feagans and Jack Harrison Feagans, of Chattanooga; parents, Hays and Evelyn Pogue; sister, Nancy Pogue Tyler, of Chattanooga; and brother, Richard "Rick" Hays Pogue, of Bradenton, Fla.; mother and father-in-law, H.W. "Dub" and Barbara Feagans; sister-in-law, Allyson Feagans Millican and husband, Brian, of Dalton, Ga.; several nieces and nephews, Jessica Pogue Porrata and husband, Gabe, of Tampa, Fla., Tyler Pogue, of Bradenton, Fla., Joshua and Rachel Tyler, of Chattanooga, and Katherine Grace and Claire Elizabeth Millican, of Dalton, Ga.; cousins, Janice Pogue and Luke Pogue, of Chattanooga, and Mimi Freedman, of California.

The family expresses our most sincere gratitude to Dr. Edward Arrowsmith, Chattanooga, and Dr. Jagasia at Vanderbilt Medical Center Nashville, Memorial Hospital, and Hospice of Chattanooga for their excellent and compassionate care during Julie's long illness.

Eleanor Franklin

Eleanor J. "Cookie" Franklin, 68, of Chattanooga, was called home Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at a local hospital.

She was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

She was preceded in death by mother, Susie Mae Jackson; father, Floyd Franklin; sister, Margaret Woodly; granddaughter, Angel Greene.

She is survived by daughter, Angela (Carl) Gustus; two sisters, Janet Hymes and Vera Jackson; four grandchildren, Billy Church Jr. and John Greene Jr., of Chattanooga, Eric (Shennerra) Church, of South Carolina, and Velejah (Tre') Jackson, of Texas; four great-grandchildren, Aerhealle, Billy III, Angel, and Caeli; two nieces; two nephews; and a host of friends and loved ones.

Graveside service will he held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Ronald Cook Sr. officiating.

The body will lie in state at the funeral home today from noon until 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Larry Gragg

Larry Russell Gragg, 67, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 1, 2010.

Mr. Gragg was born in Clayton, Ga., to Jable and Lucy Gragg. He was a member of Silverdale Baptist Church. Larry was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam, he enjoyed flying, parachuting and enjoyed his family most of all. He was a wonderful husband, proud father and even prouder "Pop Pop." He was a member of the Chattanooga Runners Club and an avid runner.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Gragg; daughter and son-in-law, Gretchen (Doug) King; granddaughter, Savannah King, all of Chattanooga; sister, Barbara Jane (Charles) Henson, Morganton, N.C.; one niece; and one nephew.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tony Walliser officiating.

Interment will be in National Cemetery with military honors.

Georgia Johnson

Georgia Ann Foster Johnson, 69, passed away Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Ringgold, Ga., to the late Jesse James and Laura Mae Drew James. She was a graduate of Howard High School and retired from TVA after 20 years of service. She was a faithful member of Rock Island Baptist Church for many years, where she served on the Usher Board, Choir, Pastor's Aid, Women's Ministry and Mother's Board. She was also an Eastern Star.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Robert, J.P., and L.M. James; sister, Maggie James; and grandsons, Paul A. James and Alexis Mayweather.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory, devoted husband, John Johnson; loving daughter, Lisa Hughes; two sons, Paul (Sharon) James and Lee Maweather; brother, Jesse James Jr., all of Chattanooga; eight stepchildren, Doris (Ronnie) Colman, Athens, Ga., Wilma (Restlin) Dean, Terri McNair, Debbie, Detria, Loette, Felicia and Judith Johnson, all of Rochester, N.Y.; sisters-in-law, Viola James, Mildred Kelley, Cora Corbin, all of Chattanooga, Loretta Dunklin and Jennell Howard, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Lucretia Lisben, of Lakeland, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives; devoted friend, Mother Roberta Burgess; and many, many friends.

James Lesley

James Lesley, 49, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, in a health care facility in Greeneville, Tenn.

James Luttrell Sr.

James A. Luttrell Sr., a World War II veteran and servant of Jesus Christ, went home to be with the Lord at his home on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009.

A lifelong resident of Signal Mountain for 88 years, he was also a member of Lupton Drive Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school for 36 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty June Luttrell; and his parents, Richard and Hassie Luttrell.

He is survived by five children, Jamie (Faith) Luttrell, LaDonna (David) Tucker and Randy Luttrell, all of Signal Mountain; Errol Luttrell, of Atlanta, and Pamela (Karl) Smith, of Lexington, Ky.; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today at Mount Carmel Baptist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Smith, the Rev. Troy Luttrell and the Rev. Vincent Luttrell officiating.

Pallbearers will be Nathaniel, Tyler, Brodie and Dillon Luttrell, Calixsto Cornavaca, Scott Brown, Solomon Smith.

Burial will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park with full military honors.

Laura Mace

Laura Mace, 49, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009.

She was a graduate of Hixson High School. She was employed by the Chattanooga Group for 28 years. She was a member of City Gate Church, where she was involved with the Ladies Prayer Group and she served as a church hostess.

She was preceded in death by grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy E. Childers and Mr. and Mrs. Otis Arnold Mace Sr.

She is survived by parents, Otis and Norma Mace, of Charlotte, N.C.; brother, Otis Arnold Mace III, of Asheville, N.C.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at 11 a.m. at City Gate Church with Rev. Roy H. Cantrell officiating.

John Mayo Sr.

John A. Mayo Sr. passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009.

He was born on March 12, 1928, in Braintree, Mass. He served his country in the U.S. Army.

He worked in the boating industry for many years before retiring as a financial adviser in 1999. In 2007, he was appointed by the governor to the Tennessee Alzheimer's Disease Task Force.

He was preceded in death by sister, Barbara Murray of Massachusetts.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Eliza Jane Kizzar; sons, John Mayo Jr., Don Mayo and Dale (Linda) Mayo; daughters, Kay Hagaman, Helen (Vernon) Truelove and Roberta (Larry) Bass; brother, Ken (Joyce) Mayo, of Suffield, Conn.; brother-in-law, Stanley Murray, of Mansfield, Mass.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Father George Schmidtt officiating.

Entombment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

David Morrow

David Carl Morrow, 61, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009.

His interests included conversing with good friends and he was an avid reader.

He is survived by his children, Christie Davis-Wiertel, of Windsor, Colo., and Lewis Davis, of Chattanooga; mother, Nell Morrow.

The visitation will be at Wilson Funeral Home in Fort Olgethorpe from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2010.

Charles H. "Billy" Porter, 60, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, in a local hospital.

Rick Scarborough Sr.

John Richard "Rick" Scarborough Sr., 61, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, in a local hospital.

Herschel Sims

Herschel Boville Sims, 96, of Collegedale, died on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009.

He was a resident of Collegedale since 1960. Herschel was a devoted Christian and member of McDonald Road Seventh-day Adventist Church. He was a very loving and caring person to his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Eloise Sims, to whom he was married to for over 50 years; and their son, Herschel Ray Sims.

Survivors include his two grandsons, Tony Ray (Kathleen) Sims and Christopher Dean Sims; two great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held in Grand Prairie, Texas, at a later date. There will be no visitation or services locally.

Vernon Stewart

Vernon Louise Stewart, 88, of Soddy-Daisy, went to be with her Lord on Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at home.

She was a lifelong resident of Soddy-Daisy, and was the daughter of the late Richard and Rosa Mae "Cricket" Lasley. She was a member of South Soddy Baptist Church.

As a young woman, Vernon was a well-known singer as "Sister Sue with The Sunshine Gang" of WDOD radio station and was offered a career with the Grand Ole Opry by Roy Acuff. She declined the offer to stay in Soddy-Daisy and raise her family. Later, she became a hairdresser (having a shop in her home) but continued using her singing talents in churches until just a few years ago, at which time her health began to deteriorate.

Vernon was preceded in death by her husband, Claude M. Stewart; brothers, Lloyd and Freddy Lasley; sister, Frances Curvin; and sons-in-law, Stuart Levi and Jim Farley.

She is survived by her daughters, Judy Levi and Claudia Farley; sons, Tony (Midge) and Eddie (Jeanette) Stewart; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; sister, Freida Sutherland; and brother, Hayden Lasley.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, in the Legacy Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Don Lasley officiating.

Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Carol Swartout

Carol Irene Swartout, 71, of Birchwood, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Swartout was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and Carl Beavers; and a brother, Billy Beavers.

She was a member of Gamble Road Baptist Church of Birchwood.

Helen Virginia Mikel Thompson, celebrated her new birthday on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, when she went to be with her Heavenly Father, the Lord Jesus Christ.

She is celebrating with her husband, the late Delma Douglas Thompson, who passed away May 4, 1975; and her late parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Mikel, of Cleveland, Tenn. She is also preceded in death by her sisters, Juanita Mikel Geren and Dorothy Mikel Ledford, both of Cleveland.

Survivors include her daughters, Merriam Calhoun and Beverly Standifer, of Knoxville; three grandchildren, English Standifer, Jennifer Gilmour and Doug Calhoun; five great-grandchildren, Ethan, Grant and Patrick Calhoun and Caleb and Noah Standifer; one sister, Wilma McConnell, of Cleveland; several nieces and nephews.

Sharon Thorn

Sharon Elizabeth Foreman Thorn, 53, beloved wife, mother and friend, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, after succumbing to injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Atlanta on Dec. 18.

Her loved ones were by her bedside for the final moments, and she left this world peacefully, surrounded by love and prayers.

Sharon was born in Knoxville on March 18, 1956, and lived much of her life in Nashville and Chattanooga. More recently, she also spent time in Carrolton, Ga., with her loving husband, Stuart Thorn, president and CEO of Southwire. The family also has a home in Greenport, N.Y., where they spent many happy summers by the sea, and she will eventually be laid to rest there.

Sharon will be remembered for her career as a talented songwriter who was loved by the Nashville music community. She captivated us all with her infectious good humor, loving nature, and dedication to her friends and family.

Her most important legacy is the family she leaves behind.

She is survived by her husband, Stuart Thorn; their six children, Meghan, Matthew and Meredith McGinnis and Alex, Jason and Tyler Thorn; two grandchildren, Madison and Nadia McGinnis; her mother, Frances Durham Gantt; and two sisters, Janet Foreman-Green and Sandy Foreman Burkett.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Chattanooga Funeral Home, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.

ROSSVILLE - Mary Marjorine "Marge" Stephens Erwin, 87, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009.

She was born Dec. 23, 1922, in Fort Payne, Ala., to the late Dr. Walter Washington and Nallie Lee Burt Stephens. After graduation she attended modeling school in Chicago and worked at the Holy Name of Jesus Hospital. Returning to Fort Payne, she worked for Christopher Motors. Mrs. Erwin married Luther John Erwin in April 1949. They resided in Rossville where Luther practiced Dentistry. Marge was a member of the Rossville Garden Club, Kosmos Woman's Club, and the Dental Auxiliary.

Dr. Erwin preceded her in death in 1999. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Christine Avery, Harley Green Stephens and Walter Washington Stephens Jr.

She is survived by daughters, Gwen (Dave) Brooks, Janice (Jon) Simonton; grandchildren, Natalie, Davidson (Tiffany), Clinton, and Reynolds Brooks, Benton and Emily Simonton; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, in the chapel.

LaFAYETTE - Fred Albert Lawrence Jr., 83, died Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at his home.

Fred had been an active member of LaFayette First United Methodist Church for 70 years, having joined in 1939.

He graduated from LaFayette High School in 1943. He drove for Burlington Industries and was the driver instructor for 28 years. After retirement he coordinated the commercial driver program and taught at Walker Technical Institute for seven years. He was a Georgia State and National Champion Truck Driver award winner for several years.
