Richard Bergthold

Richard Earl Bergthold, 65, of Ooltewah, formerly of Jal, N.M., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010.

He was born Jan. 19, 1944, in Altadena, Calif.

Mr. Bergthold was a member of First Baptist Church of Jal, N.M., and was a United States Navy veteran. He was a longtime member of the Jaycees in Davenport, Iowa, where he was a past president. He had a warm personality, a keen sense of humor, and a God-given love for people.

His father, Vincent Bergthold Sr.; and brother, Paul Bergthold preceded him in death.

Mr. Bergthold is survived by his wife, Amanda Bergthold; children, Scott (Kristy) Bergthold of Ooltewah, Kerri Bergthold, of Nashville, Andrew Bergthold of Jal, N.M.; stepdaughter, Katy (Mark) Glenn of Union City, Mich.; mother, Martha Bergthold of Joliet, Ill.; brothers, Vincent Bergthold Jr., of Plainfield, Ill., Jerry Bergthold of Richmond, Va., Thomas Bergthold ,of Plainfield, Ill.; sister, Chalah Chavaneau-Ellis of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Alyssa, Alaina, Levi, Lily and Haley; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at noon in the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve McCary officiating.

Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Myrtis Boyd

Myrtis Boyd, 57, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Jan. 4, 2010.

Survivors include sons, Ricky J. (Melisa) Boyd and John P. (Misty) Boyd.

Funeral services will be at noon Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at Reuben Strickland Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Winfred Eppenger officiating.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-noon today at Reuben Strickland Memorial Chapel.

Charles Breske

Charles Breske, 92, of Miami, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2010.

Beloved husband of the late Madge Breske; cherished father of Carole Farber, of Miami; dear brother of Alvin (Ellie) Breske, of Detroit; and cherished grandfather of Aaron Farber, of Miami.

He was a World War II veteran and a career Air Force meteorologist.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010 at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Forest Hills Cemetery.

Charlene Brooks

Charlene B. Brooks, 78, of Chattanooga, passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Brooks was born in Tazewell, Tenn., to Charles and Beulah Buchanan. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was a member of ChristWay Community Church in Ooltewah (formerly Central Baptist Church of Woodmore). She had been an avid bowler and taught arts and crafts including ceramics.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Dorothy Riley, Bobbie Gibson, Sue Craig and Brenda Bussell.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Dillis C. Brooks, retired U.S. Air Force chief master sergeant; children, Linda Ratto and husband David Little, Deb Belk and Michael Brooks and wife Susan; grandchildren, Chad (Dana) Ratto, and David and Grace Brooks; great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Emma Ratto; and several nephews and nieces.

Memorial donations may be made to ChristWay Community Church, 6201 Mountain View Road, Ooltewah, TN 37363.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, and one hour prior to the memorial service at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at the funeral home with the Rev. John Waters and the Rev. Don Sapp officiating.

Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Ruth Chazen

Ruth Ettin Chazen passed peacefully in her Chattanooga home Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at approximately 3 p.m.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Dec. 27, 1919, she later moved to Harlan, Ky., with her parents, James and Sonia Ettin and her sister, the late Nancy Ettin Merren, of Albany, Ga. The family established Ettin's Department Store which served Appalachian residents from 1923 to 1947.

Ruth Ettin Chazen was a graduate of Harlan High School, class of 1936. She later attended Lindenwood College, St. Charles, Mo., as a theater major. She met a young businessman, Julius L. Chazen, in June 1938. They were married in Knoxville in September 1938. They moved to Atlanta in June 1943 with their first two sons. Ruth Ettin Chazen served as the president of the Parent Teachers Association (PTA), James L. Key Elementary School and was the first Den Mother of the Cub Scout Pack sponsored by the school in 1948.

Known affectionately as "Aunt Ruthie" to the scores of young people who grew up with her three sons, Stephen, Bobby and Gary, their home was always open to their children's friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Julius L. Chazen.

Family members are sons Stephen (Nanci), Birmingham, Ala., Bobby (Candace) and Gary (Sally); grandchildren, Genevieve, Lizzie, Jessica and Robert Chazen Jr.

Graveside services will be held at the Mizpah Congregation Cemetery at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, followed by visitation and lunch at the Mizpah Congregation.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations to the Chattanooga Area Food Bank or Mizpah Congregation would be a thoughtful expression of the celebration of her life.

Johnetta Clemons

Johnetta Clemons departed this life Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, in a local hospital.

She was born Jan. 29, 1943, in Chattanooga to Henry and Louise Clemons.

She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age. She attended Howard High School and was employed by First Presbyterian Church until she retired.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Betty Bailey, Henrietta Clemons, Clara Hodges and Sara Linch; brother, Jessie Clemons; daughter, Lisa Clemons; grandson, Kenneth Clemons Sr.

She leaves to cherish her memory daughters, Mechelle (Alan) Jones of Chattanooga, Donna (Anthony) Jackson (Columbia, S.C.); five grandchildren, including devoted granddaughter, Tynika Clemons; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Jo Flakes (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Ruby Garth (Decatur, Ala.); devoted fiance, Carvin Russell.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at New Hope Baptist Church with Pastor Wayne Johnson officiating.

The body will lie in state at the funeral home after noon today and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.

The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. this evening at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.

Darrell Cooley

Darrell E. Cooley, 63, of East Ridge, passed from this life Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, after a long fight with cancer.

He was born June 1, 1946, at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, Ill. Darrell was proud of his many business ventures and all of his friends and family. He owned several different TV repair shops and HVAC businesses in Tennessee and Georgia. During the 1980s Darrell owned several coal mining operations including M.C. Coal Co. in Soddy-Daisy. Darrell lived life to the fullest and the family wishes to thank all of his many friends and church members for their prayers, help and consideration during the past trying times.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Cooley; mother, Louise Gravett; daughters, Candy Glass and Karen McCullough; stepchildren, Ronnie Pilgrim, Vicky Aragon, Becky Lamb and Cindy Roden; brother, Dale Cooley; sisters, Dixie Cooley and Nora Harmon; grandchildren, Madisyn Pilgrim, Caden Pilgrim, Chris Glass, Peanut "Lamar", Robert, Eric, Daniel and Sarah; great-grandchildren, Dayton Lee Glass, Cadence Glass, Maddie Hicks, Eli Roden, Corbin Roden, Breanna Roden, Brileigh Roden, Adam Lamb, Tommy Lamb, Skyler Lamb and Jordan Lamb; friends of the family, James Warner, Gene Walters, Larry Dobson, Courtney Cordova, Cathy Gann and James Goins; several nieces and nephews.

Mary Crine

Mary Duncan Crine, 85, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010.

She attended Virginia Intermont, graduating from UT Knoxville in 1945 with a B.S. in business administration, and worked for TVA and the Veterans Administration.

Mary was best known for her love of golf, playing over 50 years, and her extensive collection of golf notes and books. She was a member of both the Brainerd and Chattanooga Women's Golf Associations and the Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Henry Crine Jr.; son, William Stuart (Kim) Crine of Des Moines, Iowa; daughter, Cathy Crine (Tom) Loveless of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and grandchildren, Thomas L. Loveless III, William Scott Loveless, and Caitlin Elizabeth Crine.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at the East Chapel with the Rev. William Mills officiating.

Burial will be private.

Visitation by friends will be at the funeral home two hours prior to the service.

Hazel Dunn

Hazel Bryant Dunn, 74, of Signal Mountain, went home to be with the Lord, after passing away suddenly on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010.

She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by everyone whose lives she touched.

She was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga and Signal Mountain area. She was retired from service with the Hamilton County School Systems and a lifelong learner, both educationally and spiritually. She obtained her bachelor's degree from the University of Chattanooga. Hazel was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Chattanooga for over 50 years, where she was involved with teaching Sunday school, Bible Studies, foreign and domestic mission trips and other activities at the church and also at the Alexian Village. She was a former member of the DAR and a former volunteer with the American Red Cross.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Alden Dunn; parents, Lawrence and Ethel Bryant; her granddaughter, Olivia Dunn; and her brothers Elmer, Leon, J.C. and Lawrence Bryant.

Hazel is survived by her five children, Stephen Dunn, Stuart Dunn and wife Linda, Sonja Veazey and husband Mike, Jennifer Landon and husband Clay, and Carey Dunn and wife Marie Rumsey; six grandchildren, Chadwick Landon, Grant and Ashley Veazey, Alex and Lauren Dunn; five siblings, Lucille Parker and husband Calvin, Beatrice Lovingood and husband Charles, Una Mae Hearn, Houston Bryant and wife, Ruth, and W.R. Bryant and wife, Faye; and many nieces and nephews.

Services for Hazel will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday at the North Chapel with the Rev. Mary Jane Allen officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 2-6 p.m. today at the North Chapel.

George Foster Sr.

George Lane Foster Sr. passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, Jan. 8, 2010.

Mr. Foster was born on July 18, 1931, to W.G. and Quintene Foster. He graduated from The Baylor School in 1949. He received an academic scholarship to the University of Chattanooga and graduated in 1952.

Mr. Foster served in the Army. While stationed in Japan, he received his acceptance to Vanderbilt School of Law. At Vanderbilt, he was associate editor of the Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif. Mr. Foster published several short stories and Law Review articles. Mr. Foster graduated from Vanderbilt Law School in 1957. He met his wife, Monterey Hart MacCue, at Vanderbilt. They were married from 1955 until Mrs. Foster's passing in 1987.

Mr. and Mrs. Foster moved to Lookout Mountain where they belonged to the Lookout Mountain Golf Club and Fairyland Club. Mr. Foster was the superintendent of the Sunday school at the Church of the Good Shepherd for 19 years.

Mr. Foster began his law career as an associate with Whitaker, Hall & Haynes which later became Hall, Haynes, Lusk & Foster. He loved the practice of law. Even with his large frame, powerful voice and shirttail hanging out, he had a remarkable ability to engage a jury. He was known as one of the lions of defense.

Mr. Foster also loved to play golf. It was his dream to play the top 100 golf courses in the world. He played over half of those famous courses. Mr. Foster would complete the round without the best score, but always with the most joy and the best story of the day. Mr. Foster's optimism was evident during many card games with his dear friends at the Mountain City Club for over 40 years.

In 1990, Mr. Foster married Chris Helms. They enjoyed golf trips and trips to Disney World. Mr. Foster liked to ride roller coasters. As evident by his life's activities, Mr. Foster lived his life to the fullest with great optimism and joy.

He is survived by one brother, James Quinten Foster; his son, George Lane Foster Jr., (Debbie); his daughter, Beth Foster Janney (Alan); his wife, Chris; his nephew, William M. Foster (Nancy); and, his grandchildren Taylor Boyd Foster, Natalie Lane Foster, John Cole Janney, and Blake Coddington.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev, Robert Childers and the Honorable and Rev. Sam Payne officiating.

Visitation will be held 3 p.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain, Tenn.

Than Galyon

Nathaniel Bacon Galyon, 84, peacefully died in his sleep at home, entering Heaven on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010.

Born on June 2, 1925 in Loudon, Tenn., to Nathaniel Parks and Dora Smallen Galyon. Than, also known as N.B., graduated from Knoxville High School in 1943. Than followed in his father's footsteps with employment with the Southern Railway, as a railroad track supervisor for the engineering department. Than was proud of his service to his country's defense as an essential industrial worker during World War II.

After working for almost 20 years for Southern Railway, Than accepted a position with the city of Chattanooga Public Works Department as a construction inspector for the engineering division, from which he retired in 1990.

Than married his beloved Marie Snider of High Point, N.C., in 1952. They moved to Chattanooga in 1954. They were the proud parents of two children, Carolyn and Steven. Marie died in 1984.

Than was a 55-year member of the First-Centenary United Methodist Church, where he and Marie were members of the Yomaco Class and then the Hodge Class. Than served as Hodge Class president, was elected to two terms of the Administrative Board and participated in many church ministries. One of his greatest joys was being one of the first men to teach the Sunday School Kindergarten Class.

Than, a 32nd-degree Mason, achieved lifetime membership in the Mountain City Masonic Lodge #549 and was also a member of the Scottish Rite Society. Than proudly belonged to the Alhambra Shrine and was a member of the Parade Unit, serving two terms as unit president. Than devoted many years as treasurer for the Mosque Board and Red Fez Club of the Alhambra Shrine.

Than is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Marie Galyon, Chattanooga; son, the Rev. Dr. Steven Nathzaniel Galyon, Kingsport, Tenn., and his fiancée, Sue Ellen McMath, Trenton, Ga.; and grandson, Philip Nathaniel Galyon, Chattanooga.

Than was proud of Philip's acceptance of his being called into full-ime Christian service.

Other survivors include his brother, James Douglas (Rachel) Galyon; Susan (Mrs. Timothy) Spangler and family; nephew, Jim (Gaye) Galyon and family, all of Greensboro, N.C.

Than was laid to rest at Highland Memorial Park in Knoxville in Friday, Jan. 8, 2010.

A service of celebration of Than's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, in the Kate Lyle West Chapel of First-Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. David Harr, minister of pastoral care, presiding. The church address is 419 McCallie Ave.

Memorial remembrances may be given to the Shiners Children's Hospitals, the Children's Shoe Fund of the Chattanooga Scottish Rite, both of which may be sent to 1000 Alhambra Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37421; or to the Inner City Program of First-Centenary.

Than's family and friends were blessed by his life well lived; filled with Christian faith, sacrificial love, a strong work ethic, zest for life, a wonderful sense of humor and compassion for those in need.

Gene Gorsuch

Ruth Imogene Gorsuch, 91, of East Ridge, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010.

Mrs. Gorsuch was a member of South Seminole Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and belonged to the Love Sunday School Class.

Gene was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Roger Lee Gorsuch; and her son, Alan Lee Gorsuch. Together Gene and Roger were foster parents to 233 children.

Survivors include her children, Kathy Shell Rodgers and husband, Jim, Glenn Gorsuch and wife, Beverly, Denny Gorsuch and wife, Pat; daughter-in-law, Ritsa Gorsuch; foster son, Johnny Hurst; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to South Seminole Baptist Church, 1201 South Seminole Drive, East Ridge, TN 37412.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at the funeral home with Rev. Ron Perry officiating.

Dan Lorden

Daniel L. "Dan" Lorden, 74, of Chattanooga, died on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010.

Dan retired from the U.S. Air Force as chief master sergeant and from government service after 43 years. He served at numerous military installations in the Far East, Europe and in the U.S. During this time, he earned his bachelor's degree from the University on Nebraska at Omaha, Neb., and his master's degree in public administration from the Golden Gate University at San Francisco, Calif. After his retirement from the military, he was employed by Bahr Inc. in Alexandria, Va., as a military manpower consultant. Dan was a longtime member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and had served as the Alzheimer's committee chairman of the local chapter for several years.

He was a Christian and devoted member of Ridgedale Baptist Church and the Covenant and Promise Sunday school classes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius P. and Helen H. Lorden; two brothers and one sister, all of New Hampshire.

Dan is survived by his wife, Margaret Smith Lorden; daughter, Lora Templeton, Novato, Calif.; two brothers, John Lorden and William Lorden, both of New Hampshire; two sisters, Helen Sugg, Calif., and Josephine Dziura, N.H; several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Ridgedale Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Owens officiating.

Interment will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.

Lloyd Martin

Lloyd Patrick Martin, 98, of Chattanooga, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, in a local health care facility.

Mr. Martin was born in Harriman, Tenn. He was the son of the late Charles and Elizabeth Martin and was a Land Developer.

Survivors include his son, Charles (Peggy) Martin, Tarpon Springs, Fla.; daughter, Sharon Martin, Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

There will no services or visitation.

Regenia Martin

Regenia Martin, 86, passed away Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at a local hospital.

William Massa Sr.

William S. Massa Sr., 98, of Chattanooga, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010.

A native of Cookeville, Tenn., he has been a resident of the Chattanooga area for many years. He attended Tennessee Polytechnic Institute which is now Tennessee Technological University. He graduated in 1935 from the Alabama Polytechnic Institute now Auburn University with a B.S. degree in civil engineering. He was an active member of Brainerd United Methodist Church and was retired from TVA after 41 years of service as chief of the Maps and Surveys branch.

Many of the procedures and standards now in use in the national topographic map series were developed by TVA under Mr. Massa's direction. He was a member and past president of both the Chattanooga Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Chattanooga Region American Society of Photogrammetry. He was also a life member of the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping and served on the National Board of Directors of it's Topographic and Cartographic Divisions. He also holds membership in the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Chattanooga Engineers Club, Chi Epsilon Honorary Civil Engineering Fraternity and the Federal Geodetic Control Committee. He was past president of the Chattanooga TVA Luncheon Club. He was a registered professional engineer in Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Hazel Wallace and Margaret Hembree.

Survivors include a daughter, Margaret M. Dixon, Knoxville; son, William S. Massa Jr., Nashville; dear friend and companion, Eloise Brown; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters; nine stepgrandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Genevive DeHoog officiating.

Interment will be at 11 a.m. CST Tuesday in Cookeville City Cemetery in Cookeville, Tenn.

Selwyn A. McDow, 62, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Jan. 4, 2010.

Selwyn lived in Southaven, Miss., and retired from the IRS in Memphis.

Bertha H. Thedford, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at the age of 93.

She was a retired teacher of Girls Preparatory School and an active member of the Chattanooga Doll Club.

James Theodore Tumlin passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, in a local hospital.

He attended Howard High School and was a veteran of the United States Navy.

Josephine Underwood

Josephine Underwood, 89, of Ooltewah, passed away Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010.

A native of Moultrie, Ga., she was a resident of Ocala, Fla., for many years before moving to the Chattanooga area in 1952.

She was of the Seventh-day Adventist faith and was the wife of the late E.B. Underwood.

She was also preceded in death by four brothers.

Survivors include two daughters, Bertha Jo (David) Knecht, Chattanooga, and Ernestine (Steve) Poenitz, Indianapolis, Ind.; son, J.B. (Anne) Underwood, Ooltewah; four stepsons, Harold (Mary) Underwood, Marietta, Ga., David (Joella) Underwood, Eastman, Ga., Raymond Underwood, Moore, S.C., and Ralph Underwood, Dayton, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Dwight Herod officiating.

Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Graysville, Tenn.

Don O'Shell

DAYTON -- Don C. O'Shell, 90, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at Rhea Medical Center in Dayton.

He was born in Altoona, Pa., on Aug. 15, 1919, the son of the late George and Hazel Taylor O'Shell.

Don lived in Altoona, until moving to Berea, Ohio, where he stayed until moving to Dayton in 2004. Don had been employed with the Pennsylvania Railroad, Nestaway and then was a school teacher where he taught Vocational Ed in Polaris, Ohio. He served his country with the U.S. Navy Seabees during WWII. While in Ohio he was a member of the Berea Baptist Church and Grace Bible Church after moving to Dayton, Tenn.

She was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Daniel Stevens.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Vivian (Bigelow) O'Shell; three daughters, Sue Stevens, Connie (Marty) Hartzell and Sally (Jerry) Griswold all of Dayton; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Graveside services and burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with his pastor, Dr. Doug Russell, officiating.

Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy.

Col. McCullough was born Aug. 8, 1922, to John L. and Thelma Carson McCullough. He was a graduate of Baylor Military Academy and attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Joe Restaino passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at home surrounded by his family.

Joe's love for his family and friends will be forever remembered.

Joe was born to Diane and Michael Restaino in Dallas, Texas, on Dec. 21, 1989. He attended The McCallie School in Chattanooga, graduating cum laude, and was the recipient of the Campbell Award in May 2008. He went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania.
