Zona Barker

Zona Cates Barker, 83, of Hixson, answered her call to the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Zona was a Bible teacher for 22 years with a group of ladies who met privately in their homes. She was a member of Open Door Baptist Church. Zona was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a daughter of the late Albert and Dora Cates and was preceded in death by her sister, Peggy Agee.

Survivors: husband, James Leonard Barker; two daughters, Susan Hodges and husband, Ron, Chattanooga, and Bonnie Standefer and husband, Wayne, Crossville, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Michelle Nicholson and husband, Daniel, Chattanooga, and Stacy Orman and husband, David, Lebanon, Tenn.; three grandsons, Mike Hodges and wife, Carrie, Chattanooga, Scott Standefer and wife, Chassidy, Los Angeles, Calif., and Kevin Standefer and wife, Gina, Kansas City, Kan.; two great-granddaughter, Amber Nicholson, Chattanooga, and Jadyn Standefer, Los Angeles, Calif.; two great-grandsons, Mason Standefer, Los Angeles, Calif., and Colt Orman, Lebanon, Tenn.; brother-in-law, Herman Agee; and two nieces, Judy Abrams and Sandy Williams.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Lane Funeral Home on Ashland Terrace with Rev. Mark Tyson officiating.

Interment will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Taylor Coulter

Taylor Evans Coulter, 87, of Ridgeland, S.C., departed this life Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, in Hardeeville, S.C.

He was born to Otto and Mattie Coulter of Soddy-Daisy, on July 2, 1922, in Chattanooga.

During World War II, Mr. Coulter served his country in the South-East Asian Theatre, along the infamous Burma Road, where he rose to the rank of sergeant in the U.S. Army. Upon his return, he was employed by Dixie Yarns of Chattanooga, from which he retired after more than 40 years. He then worked part time as a machinist for several more years.

Mr. Coulter was a long-standing member of Stoney Point Baptist Church in Soddy-Daisy, but he attended services where ever he found himself to be.

He leaves behind to mourn, his wife of 60 years, Carolyn Morgan Coulter, of Ridgeland, S.C.; four children, Odis Ann (Leroy) Norris of Beaufort, S.C., Jimmy E. (Amelia) Coulter, of Atlanta, Constance Layne, of Chattanooga, and Penny Peek, of Cave Springs, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Constance (James) Boaz, of Chattanooga; and many devoted relatives and friends, especially Dorothy Jones and family, former co-worker Clayton Rothwell, Lois Keys and Gloria Taylor, all of Chattooga.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Beulah (James) Jackson, of Chicago, Ill.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, at Sauls Funeral Home Chapel, 310 W. Adams Ave., Ridgeland, S.C., with burial in Beaufort National Cemetery at a later date.

A visitation will be held from 3 till 8 p.m. today, Jan. 13, at the funeral home.

Sauls Funeral Home of Ridgeland is assisting the family with their arrangements.

Joe Currie

Joe Currie, 74, of Chattanooga passed away Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at a local hospital.

Mr. Currie was born and raised in Jacksonville, Ala., where he went to elementary school, high school and college. He attended Jacksonville State University on a football scholarship. While in college he was a member of the ROTC program. After graduation he went into the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant. He spent six years in the military. While there, he attended flight school and became a pilot and also was involved with the guided missile program. After six years, he resigned his military commission and went to work in Aerospace at Cape Canaveral, Fla. He worked there for four years and then went to South Mississippi Missile Testing Facility where he worked for three years. The space program started phasing down during that time and he went to work in Chattanooga for TVA, where he retired in 1996 after 26 years of service.

Mr. Currie was a great family man. He always enjoyed spending time with his family. He was known as Papa Joe to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also loved having his vegetable garden every year.

Joe was a member of Hixson First Baptist Church in Hixson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jabe and Velma Currie; one brother, Jabe Currie Jr.; one sister, Louise Watson; and one niece, Martha Currie.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Joyce; two children, Randy Currie and Denise (Clint) Turner; five grandchildren, Brittany (Craig) Dedmon, Jennifer Currie (Jerimi), Brandon Walker, Ashley Currie and Tyler Burt; a stepgranddaughter, Sandy King; and three great-grandchildren, Briana and Hannah Griffith and Autumn Mabe.

Mr. Currie will participate in the Tennessee Donor Society as a tissue donor per his wishes.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Shannon, the Rev. Myron Wilkins and the Rev. Joel Wood officiating.

Burial will be at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Eloise Elizabeth Custer, 90, of Birchwood, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, from her earthly home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at 1 p.m. in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Josh Cornelius officiating.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Thelma Dyer

Thelma Dyer, 100, Chattanooga, died Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, ending the life of an extraordinary lady.

"Granny," as she was known to her family and many friends, lived 100 full years! She was born and raised in Athens, Tenn., to Fred and Ella Alloway, a family that owned a country store. Soon the depression of the 1920s changed their lives and Granny began her long career as a tailor working into her 90s. Her reputation and skills were her strengths.

She was preceded in death by her daughters, Phyllis Trotter, Chattanooga, Kirma Riddle, Rossville, and Sandra Morgan, Lawrenceville, Ga.

Survivors are her grandchildren, Roy (Paula) Deason III, Murfreesboro, Tenn., Kathy (Tom) Dunnigan, Hixson, Tenn., Mike (Judy) Trotter, Dalton, Ga., Joy (Mike) Phillips, McDonough, Ga., Sonja Ayers, Rossville, Ronnie (Kim) Riddle, Chattanooga, Tansy Riddle, Chattanooga, and Donna (Irwin) Citrin, Lawrenceville, Ga.; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel.

Interment will be in Forest Hills Cemetery.

Joe Gawrys

Joseph Patrick Gawrys, 55, a resident of Chattanooga for over 29 years, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2010.

Joe was born in Indianapolis, Ind., to Kathleen and Joseph Gawrys.

Joe taught at the Baylor School for 29 1/2 years. He graduated from Wasbash College and Harvard Divinity School.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathleen Gawrys, and nephew, Benjamin Farber.

Joe is survived by his wife, Sue Gawrys; two daughters, Nancy (Ken) Masengil, Flintstone, Ga., and Jennifer Morris, Tuscon, Ariz.; father, Joseph H. Gawrys, Indianapolis, Ind.; five sisters, Mary Gawrys, Dekalb, Ill., Eileen Gawrys (John Rogers), Honolulu, Hawaii, Sharon Brown, Indianapolis, Ind., Patricia Gawrys (Craig Bixler), St. Charles, Ill., and Nancy Gawrys, Indianapolis, Ind.; one brother, Kevin Gawrys (Karen) Indianapolis, Ind.; one grandson, Jackson Parham; one granddaughter, Emmeline Parham, of Chattanooga; and his beloved dog, Al.

Robert Goins Sr.

Robert Eugene Goins Sr., 81, of Chattanooga, peacefully to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, and now living the promise of Salvation.

He served in the U.S. Army, came home from Japan, went to college and graduated from the University of Chattanooga. He dedicated his life to giving his family the best by excelling in the world of business. He started as a chemist at Berkart Shier Chemical Co., became vice president of GAF Corp., and owner of Colox Corp. in Dalton. He holds several patents pertaining to the betterment of the Wet Textile Processing Industry.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Adela Steele Goins; sisters, Ruth Goins Alley and Inez Goins; and brother, Charles Goins Jr.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mavis Ann Goins; two daughters, Robbie (Butch) Harvey and Ginze (James) Newman, Chattanooga; son, Robert E. Goins Jr., Houston, Texas; two sisters, Virginia Adams (Don) Rush and Betty Ann (Trent) Strickland, one grandchild, Rachel Harvey; and two great-grandchildren, Chandler and Christian. Bob devoted himself to being an extraordinary husband, devoted father and loyal friend. His countenance, kindness and smile will live forever in those that knew him. Bob was a member of East Brainerd Church of Christ.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Minister C.G. Griffith officiating.

Emtombment will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

Niyah Lechelle Hill, 16 months, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at her residence.

Charles Johnson

Charles F. Johnson, 81, of Hixson, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, in a local hospital.

Charles was a member of Berean Baptist Church and was retired from DuPont with over 30 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Standifer.

Survivors: wife, Ruth Jackson Johnson; two daughters Vickie (Mickey) Hardeman, Soddy-Daisy, and Carolyn (John) Lindsey, Hixson; one stepson, Jimmy Jackson (fiancé Janet Hinds) Hixson; one sister, Lora (Billy) Burroughs, Soddy-Daisy; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

At Charles' request there will be no visitation and private graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Rev. Ted Painter officiating.

Perry Dean Keck, 50, of Dixon, Ill., died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010.

Matthew Kreger, 28, passed away at his home in Ooltewah Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010.

He is survived by his mother, Cheryl Kreger, of Chattanooga; his father, Mike Kreger; one brother, Michael E. Kreger; one sister, Melissa Roberts; two nephews, Tyler and Blake Roberts; four nieces, Kaitlyn Roberts, Angel, Gabriella and LilyAnn Kreger, all of Ooltewah; and his maternal grandmother, Bobbie Meeks, of Hattiesburg, Miss.

A memorial service will be held at Collegedale Community Church located at 4995 Swinyar Drive, Collegedale, on Friday, Jan. 15 at 3 p.m.

Mabel Iris Mall, 79, of Chattanooga, passed on to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, in a local hospital.

Martha Miles

Martha Bradford Miles, 79, of Signal Mountain, passed away Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010.

She was a graduate of Central High School and a longtime member of Signal Mountain Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children, Diane Breazeale, of Nashville, Steven (Sharon) Miles, of Dayton Mountain, and Mark Miles, of Signal Mountain; granddaughter, Christie (Nathan) Denton, of Chattanooga; adopted grandchildren, Katy and Whitney Turnbull, of Signal Mountain; brother, Jack Bradford, of Alpharetta, Ga.; two sisters, Mary (Bob) Allison, of Chattanooga, and Charlotte Everton, of Signal Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, Jan. 16, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Wayside Presbyterian Church.

Winton Preston

Winton Russell Preston, 81, businessman, churchman and advocate for education, died at his home in Ooltewah on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010.

A native of New England, Preston attended Southern Missionary College, today known as Southern Adventist University in Collegedale. While attending school, he got a job at College Press and worked his way up to become manager. A career in printing was the fulfillment of his boyhood dream, after receiving a small, lead-type printing press on his ninth birthday.

In 1955, he established Preston Printing Co. in Cleveland, Tenn., and erected a printing plant on North Lee Highway that he owned and operated until 1988 when he sold the business. Under his leadership, the company forged a regional and national reputation for high-quality printing, particularly in four-color work. His business grew with the addition of other printing plants in Manchester, Ga., and Knoxville, Tenn., and introduced a magazine called Outdoor Living.

In 1960, Preston and his brother, Forrest L. Preston, created a company called Hospital Publications to produce patient booklets and public relations materials for the nation's hospitals. That business continued until 1972.

Preston was a devout member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He was a founder of Bowman Hills Seventh-day Adventist Church, and previously belonged to Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he served as chairman of deacons.

He was a benefactor of Faith for Today, based in Thousand Oaks, California, the very first television ministry established in the United States, and served on its advisory board for years.

A strong proponent of education, Preston was a founder of the Bowman Hills Seventh-day Adventist School in Cleveland, and was a leader in the development of Cohutta Springs Conference Center and Youth Camp in Crandall, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Ethel Preston; a sister, Shirley Horne; and a daughter, Wynene L. Preston.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lourene Sykes Preston; a sister, Beverly Fletcher and her husband, Dr. Weldon Fletcher, of Winchester, Ore.; a brother, Forrest L. Preston, and his wife, Kathleen, of Cleveland, Tenn.; a grandson, Brook Preston, and his wife, Jessica, of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Dwight Herod of Bowman Hills Seventh-day Adventist Church officiating.

A private graveside service for the family will be held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 13, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Cleveland.

Louise Rusbridge

Louise Baker Rusbridge Posey, 94, of Chattanooga passed away peacefully in her home Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010.

Louise was born in Cleveland, Tenn., on March 28, 1915. She was the eldest of eight children and throughout her life remained extremely close to her brothers and sisters.

Louise was a member of the Eastern Star Order and was a member of Central Presbyterian Church. Louise and Rusty were also among the original members of the Wolftever Fishing Club and spent many happy summers there. Affectionately known as "Nana" by those closest to her, Louise was always known for her sunny disposition and kind words for every situation. She loved living life and her time on this Earth was lived to the fullest. Nana lived for many years in New Orleans before settling back in the Chattanooga area in 1950. She was married to her true love, "Rusty," for 40 years and was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. One of her greatest joys in life was the special bond she had with her granddaughter and taking care of her "little Robin." Louise touched the lives of everyone she knew and she will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Norton Clark Rusbridge; second husband, Major Barron B. Posey; brothers, Raymond, William and Russell Baker; and her granddaughter, Robin Elizabeth Shelton.

She is survived by her daughter, Annette Rusbridge Shelton (Dr. Robert); granddaughter, LeAnn Shelton Merrell; great-grandchildren, Jacob DiChiacchio, McClain Merrell and Alexandria Merrell; sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Touchstone, Mrs. Katherine Morgan, Mrs. Betty Cawood (Henley) and Mrs. Barbara Mason (Gene). She also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews, including Rita Touchstone Foster and Judith Cawood Shirley, who lovingly shared many happy adventures with her in her later years.

Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at the North Chapel with the Rev. Wayland Stewart officiating.

Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 13, 2010, at the North Chapel.

Virginia Thiem

Virginia C. Thiem, 86, of Hixson, passed away Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010.

She was born July 1, 1923.

Virginia was USA's Tennessee Mom-of-the-Year and past president of the Valleybrook Community Club. She was married to the late John Thiem for 29 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Irene Pitcher, and a sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and Marvin Markert, all of Cincinnati, Ohio.

She is survived by her daughter, Judith Thiem (Kenneth) Barker, of Hixson; son, Jon (Barbara) Thiem, of Fort Collins, Colo.; granddaughters, Emily Barker, of Memphis, and Julie Barker (Bradley) Hancock, of Memphis; grandsons, Benjamin (Mitsuka) Thiem, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Nathaniel (Claudia) Thiem, of Boulder, Colo.; niece, Marcy (Dan) Ross, and sons of Baton Rouge, La.; and nephew, Kim Markert, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

There will be a private memorial service for family and family friends at a later date.

William Thurman

William Francis Thurman, 81, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2010.

He was of the Christian faith. He graduated as an accomplished pianist from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired from TVA. He was an experienced pilot and built numerous experimental aircrafts. He was a faithful and supportive husband and father and will be dearly missed.

He was preceded by his parents, Wesley Mitchell Thurman and Frances Cosper Thurman; brother, Mitchell Thurman Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Patricia Thurman; children, William F. Thurman Jr., Donna (Dale) Boswell, Brenda (Roy) Steele; grandchildren, Allison (Aaron) Benson, Tyler William Steele; great-grandchildren, Reese Benson; and brother, James Thurman.

Graveside service was at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hamilton County Memorial Park.

Catherine Gail Wilhoite, 57 of Chattanooga passed away Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at her home.

Cathy was a graduate of Red Bank High School class of 1970 and earned a B.S. Degree from The University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Cathy lived in Charlotte, N.C., before moving back to Chattanooga in 2006. She was preceded in death by her father, Harold C. Wilhoite.

Survivors: mother, Lovenia Wilhoite, Chattanooga; sister, Merry Lue Castings, Hixson; brother, Mark Wilhoite, Chattanooga; uncle, Harry Ritchie, Harrison; niece, Stefanie Wynne; and nephew Grant Castings, both of Ringgold.

James Layne

GRUETLI-LAAGER - James Ed Layne, 77, died Monday Jan. 11, 2010, at Nashville VA Medical Center.

He proudly served his country in the Korean War as a sailor in the U.S. Navy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clell Sr. and Mary Sanders Layne; brothers, Carl, Claude, Tommy and Clell Jr. Layne; sisters, Sally, Grace and Linda; son, Brent Layne.

GRAYSVILLE - Mary Frances Lee, 79, died Tuesday Jan. 12, 2010, at Rhea Medical Center in Dayton.

A lifelong resident of Graysville, she was born Oct. 10, 1930, in Coulterville. She was a homemaker and a member of New Union Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Dennis C. Lee of Graysville; daughter, Denise (Robert) Keltch, of Dayton; two granddaughters, Chelsea and Rylee Keltch; several nieces and nephews; and caregivers Meda Jump, Tonya Cross, Aly Cross, Mary Sneed and Kenneth Cross

She was preceded in death by her parents, Maxie and Nell Swafford Skillern; the parents, who raised her, Levi and Pearle Swafford Northrup; her brother, Charles Skillern; and granddaughter, Erin Danielle Keltch.

Funeral services for Mary will be today at 4 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Danny Reuhling officiating.

ROSSVILLE - Samuel G. Crough Jr., 79, passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, in a local hospital.

He was a member of East Ridge Baptist Church and the Go Getters Sunday School Class. Sam was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was president of the Siskin Stroke Support Group. He was a member of Harrison Lodge 114 F&AM and had worked for John Hicks Oldsmobile as a salesman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Crough; son, Robert Crough; and his parents, Sam and Mabel Crough.

Survivors include two sons, Michael (Dawn) Crough, of Chattanooga, and Johnny Crough, of Mims, Fla.; two daughters, Susan Lee (Victor) Icenhower, of Fort Riley, Kan., and Valerie Hickman (Larry Hawk), of Harrison; five grandchildren, Alex, Jaden, Sean and Jason Crough and Kenny Hickman Jr.; one great-granddaughter; and caregivers, Angela Rennolds, Fredia "T.T." Bell, Betty Smith and Michelle Wright.

FORT OGLETHORPE - Clarence Edward Jessee, 83, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at his residence.

A native of Southern West Virginia, he was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired as Vice President of Coal Mine Safety Operations for Allied Chemical Corporation. Mr. Jessee was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Oglethorpe.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Dorsie and Martha Jessee, and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors are his wife of almost 60 years, Delphia (Dean) Jessee; children, Linda (Dr. Marvin Mills), Ringgold, Ed (Morgan) Jessee, Fort Oglethorpe, Rick (Julie) Jessee, Ocala, Fla.; grandchildren, Stephanie Bracken, Castle Rock, Colo., Christopher Mann, Roanoke, Va., Erin Witschey, Weirton, W.Va., and Carrie Hewitt, Chesapeake, Va.; sister, Bess Dawson, Spring Hill, Fla.; eight great-grandchildren; and his loving companion cat, Phoebe.

She was a lifelong resident of North Georgia and is a member of North Summerville Baptist Church. Ruby retired from Barwick Carpet in 1980 after many years of employment and enjoyed cooking holiday meals for her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis E. Millican; parents, McKinley and Allie Kinsey; son, Mike Mitchell; sisters, Ethel Furgeson and Ruth Harris; and brothers, David Kinsey, Harold Kinsey, Frank Kinsey and Charles Kinsey.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Billy and Carol Mitchell, David and Gayle Mitchell and Richard and Sheila Mitchell; sister, Jewel Baker and Linda King; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
