Beth Alexander

Virginia Elizabeth "Beth" McKee Alexander died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010.

Born in Graysville, Tenn., in 1934, she attended Collegedale Academy from 1948-1952 and Southern Missionary College from 1951-1954. In 1954 she married James T. Alexander, M.D. They were longtime residents of Ukiah, Calif., from 1962 to 2003 when they moved to Ooltewah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, O.D. McKee and Anna Ruth King McKee; and her sister, Wyn McKee Stevens.

Survivors are her husband of 55 years, James T. Alexander, M.D.; children, Kathy Alexander Beagle Janzen and husband, Terry, of Ooltewah, Donald James Alexander, Harrison; grandchildren, Anna Lee Beagle, Christopher Lee Beagle and wife, Laura, all of Ooltewah, Justin Travis Alexander, Chattanooga, Liesl Michele Alexander, Phoenix, Ariz.; great-grandson, Dominic James Alexander, Phoenix; brothers, Ellsworth McKee Sr. and wife, Sharon, Jack McKee and wife, Betty, all of Ooltewah.

Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. today in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East, with Pastor Dwight Herod officiating.

Charles Breske

Charles Breske, 92, of Miami, a retired USAF captain, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2010.

Beloved husband of the late Madge Cathcart Breske; cherished father of Carol Farber, of Miami; dear brother of Alvin (Ellie) Breske, of Detroit, Mich.; and cherished grandfather of Aaron Farber, of Miami.

He was a World War II veteran and a career Air Force meteorologist. Charles met Madge and her sisters while in military training in Chattanooga during WWII.

Burial was Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at Forest Hills Cemetery.

Elizabeth Buckner

Elizabeth Louise Buckner, 79 of Chattanooga passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010.

She was born in Shady Dale, Ga., in 1930 to the late Edgar Harrison and Emma Ethel Buckner. She moved to Chattanooga in the 1940s and was a graduate of Red Bank High School and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She was retired from the Tennessee Department of Human Services where she was a social worker for 24 years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Edith (Warren) Smith, Sue (Arthur) Ellis; and a brother Harry (Elaine) Buckner.

Survivors: sister, Eunice Buckner Cathy, Chattanooga; brother, Durwood (Jane) Buckner, Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday graveside at Chattanooga Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from noon until 1:30 p.m. Monday at Lane Funeral Home on Ashland Terrace.

Bill Carr

William Edward Carr, 62, of Signal Mountain, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, after a courageous battle against cancer at Alexian.

Bill was born in Binghamton, N.Y., and is survived by his wife, Sibyl and his "little girl" Cokie. In 1978, Bill moved to Chattanooga to work in industrial water treatment where he earned the respect of his customers, colleagues and competitors. Known as "The Professor" by his co-workers, Bill will be remembered for his upright character, integrity, intelligence and love for the game of golf, including its rules. His troubleshooting and problem-solving skills were well-known and uncanny. He was a mentor and a teacher and influenced many men, both personally and professionally.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date by Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace.

Peggy Claiborne

Peggy Cantrell Claiborne, 74, of Chattanooga, went home to be with her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, from a local hospital surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Sept. 8, 1935, in Raburn, Ga. to the late Judge and Lillian Cantrell.

Mrs. Claiborne served as a registered nurse at Erlanger on the cardiac floor for nine years. She was a former substitute teacher for the Chattanooga School System.

Her love for the Lord was evident in her service and membership at Brainerd Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She was a member of the choir and taught girls Sunday school classes for many years. Mrs. Claiborne also led Monday morning devotionals (Devotionals with Peggy) at the Terrace on Mountain Creek, where she and her husband resided.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Harry A. Claiborne; daughter, Deborah "Debbie" Dyer and her husband, Carl, of Chattanooga; sons, Shephen "Eric" Claiborne and his wife, Valerie, of Ooltewah, "Phillip" Carl Claiborne and his wife, Cheryl, of Hixson; sisters, Gail Dunn and Dawn Johnson; and brother, Michael Cantrell, all of Knoxville; grandchildren, Katie, Justin, Michael and Renee; great-grandchildren, Elise, Elliott and Elijah; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Brainerd Baptist Church (300 Brookfield Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37411) with the Rev. Sam Cravatt, the Rev. George Clark and the Rev. Michael Campbell officiating.

Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2-5 today at the funeral home.

Kathy Close

Kathy Phifer Close, of Signal Mountain, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010.

Kathy was born in McMinnville, Tenn., where she graduated from City High School and was a 1974 graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She was a Senior Cadet with the Girl Scouts in McMinnville and was a member of ZTA Sorority. Kathy was a schoolteacher in the Hamilton County School System, having taught at Birchwood Elementary before moving to Red Bank Elementary, for the past 35 years. She was named Teacher of the Year in 2007 for the Hamilton County School System and served as secretary for the Alpha Delta Kappa Teacher's Sorority. She was a member of Signal Mountain Baptist Church but was attending First Christian Church. Kathy lovingly taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at both churches.

Kathy is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Paul Mathes Close; two daughters, Dr. Elizabeth D. "Betsy" Close and her fiancée, Timothy Jackson, and Virginia M. "Ginny" Close and her fiancée, Josh Whitt; her parents, Harold and Mary G. Phifer, of McMinnville; and a brother, Steve Phifer; several nieces and nephews.

Services for Kathy will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the North Chapel with the Rev. Paul G. Rebelo officiating.

Burial will follow in Chattanooga Memorial Park, "Duck Pond Cemetery."

The family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. today and 5-8 p.m. on Monday at the North Chapel.

James Cunningham Jr.

James F. Cunningham Jr., son of James F. Cunningham Sr. and Irene Cunningham, departed this world suddenly on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010.

He was the ultimate provider for his family and dedicated his life to building a better world for those around him. To the casual observer, he appeared a gruff bear of a man, but was, in reality, a sweet gentle penguin.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Diana S. Cunningham; son, Christopher James Cunningham; daughters, Cathy Jordan and Karen Cunningham; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Etheridge; sons-in-law, Sean Jordan and Eric Wilson; and his much loved grandsons, Dylan and Gage Jordan. The family offers special thanks to Jim and Eileen Willett, Gary Stout, Herzog Construction Cos., and the unsung heroes who bravely tried to save him at Kroger that day.

A gathering was held by the family on Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Joe Duncan

Joseph "Joe" Capers Duncan, of Chattanooga, 89, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010.

Joe was a tall, gentle man with a kind heart who touched all who knew him. His caring spirit led him to give generously of his time, energy and resources in helping others.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Joe was a native of North Carolina, born in Raleigh and living in Franklin and Asheville. He attended an Episcopal boarding school, Christ School, in Arden, N.C., graduating in 1937. His father had graduated from the Christ School in 1907 and his parents were the first couple ever married in the chapel. He attended Biltmore College in Asheville, N.C., for one year.

In 1940, Joe was called into active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserves in Key West, Fla., and served on the destroyer USS Broome until May 1941, then as chief radioman at the naval radio station in the Canal Zone of Panama until 1945. In 1946, he was employed as engineer at Asheville radio stations WWNC and WISE, and as chief engineer at WNCA. He returned to Duke University in 1947, graduating with a BS in electrical engineering in 1949 while at the same time serving as chief engineer at station USDUK in Durham.

In 1949, he was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in Jackson, Tenn., in the western area by the Division of Power Operations and in 1950 by the Division of Power Engineering in Chattanooga as supervisor of the radio section of the communications branch, where he remained until his retirement in 1983 after 34 years with TVA.

Joe met his wife, Esther, while they were both members of the church choir at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. An active church member at St. Paul's, Joe sang in the choir for 45 years, served on the vestry as Junior and Senior Wardens, and taught in the Sunday school for 17 years. He was on the stained glass committee during the addition of several windows, visiting the studio in England during the design period.

He was also responsible for the installation of a radio broadcast and sound booth and procurement of control and recording equipment and training of control operators.

As an ardent lover of classical music, he sang in the Chattanooga Civic Chorus and briefly in the Bach Chorus under Dr. Werner Wolff. Joe was a longtime member of the Chattanooga Music Club and the English Speaking Union.

Joe was an avid amateur radio operator, receiving his license in 1936, as W4ECW, and making contacts with others around the world. He has been a member of the Asheville and Chattanooga amateur radio clubs.

After coming to Chattanooga in 1950, Joe audited a course in conversational Spanish at UTC and ended up teaching Spanish at Senior Neighbors for several years. He was a volunteer tutor with Hispanic clients through the READ program.

Joe traveled extensively both before and after retirement. He made a European group tour covering six countries. He accompanied Esther on Provident Insurance business trips to Montreal and Quebec, London and Paris, Hawaii, a Caribbean cruise, Madrid, Brussels and a Rhine river cruise. His daughter accompanied him on a cruise through the Mediterranean and his son accompanied him on a cruise to South America.

Joe Duncan was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Norvin Cornelius Duncan and Mary Olivia Butt Duncan; his wife of 45 years, Esther Walton Gilbert Duncan; and brothers Norvin C. Duncan Jr. and Horace G. Duncan.

He is survived by daughter Liz Duncan (Joe) Pratt, of Chattanooga; son Tom G. (Nancy) Duncan, of Algonquin, Ill.; grandchildren Tracy and Dan Duncan; sister, Jane Gibree of Ashland, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Joe's caregivers: Metrice Brown, Pat Truett, Tina Finney, Sandra Yarbrough, Lisa Larson and Sabrina Aref who lovingly cared for him as if he were their own father.

We also wish to thank the staff of Life Care of East Ridge who were so caring to Joe and his family.

A memorial service is being planned and arrangements will be announced at a later date.

Ga'Sya Fears, infant daughter of Tierra Fears, passed away Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, in Nashville.

Other survivors are grandmother, Christina Fears; great-grandmother, Shirley Fears; great-great-grandmother, Minnie Cunningham; aunts, Tyra, Michelle and Davonte Harris and Comesha, Jameia and Elesha DuPree; great-aunts, Sonia and Alberta Fears; cousin, Montrell Fears; great-great-aunts and a host of other cousins and friends.

Anna Hain

Anna Calabro Hain, 79, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2010.

She was born on Aug. 11, 1930, in Reading, Pa., to the late Francesca and Guiseppe Calabro.

She worked for Boscov's Department store in Reading for 25 years before retiring in 1986.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Frank.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Harold "Snapper" Hain; daughter, Cindy (David) Carroll; two grandchildren, Christopher and Vincent Carroll; brother, Michael Calabro; sisters, Marsey Buono and Jennie Shalter; nephews and nieces.

A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at St. Jude Catholic Church, 930 Ashland Terrace at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, with Father Miguel Velez officiating.

The family will meet friends in the vestibule of the church beginning at 10:30 a.m. that morning.

A private graveside service will be held in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Rev. Albert Hamby, 87, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at his residence.

Herman Hawkins

Herman "Pete" Hawkins, 75, of Signal Mountain, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, in a local health care facility.

He was the son of the late Len and Willie Mae Hawkins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Germany. Herman was a retired maintenance supervisor with CMS.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie Jones Hawkins; brothers, Joseph and Charles; and sister, Barbara Watkins.

Survivors include his daughter, Cathy (Jerry) Belcher, of Signal Mountain; son, Michael (Rhonda) Hawkins, of Ooltewah; sisters, Shirley Clingerman and Alma Henderson, both of Signal Mountain; brother, Walter (Carol) Hawkins, of Signal Mountain; two grandsons, Heath Belcher and Michael Hawkins; several nieces and nephews.

Margaret Hicks-Kelley

Margaret Novella Hicks-Kelley, 71, of Ardmore, Ala., formerly of Chattanooga, departed this life Friday, Jan. 22, 2010.

She was born in Chattanooga to the late Marvin and Ethel Voiles Ingle, and was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Kelley.

Survivors include her son, Ricky (Debbie) Hicks, of Ardmore; brother, Billy Ingle, of Chickamauga, Ga.; grandchildren, Samantha Hicks, Stephanie Harrison, both of Ardmore, Ricky (Christina) Hicks, of Panama City, Fla.; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, in the chapel with Pastor Waylon Ingle officiating.

Interment will follow in Coulter Cemetery.

Bobby Lewis

Bobby Lee Lewis, 79, of East Ridge, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010.

Mr. Lewis was born in Chattanooga to the late Floyd and Leloa Lewis. He was retired from Lawson Electric with over 35 years of service where he belonged to the IBEW 755. He was also a member of East Ridge Lodge 755 F&AM, the Fraternal Order of Eagles 945, and the American Legion Post 95. He was also a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during the Korean War, and a graduate of Central High School.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Velma "Val" Lewis; brother, Clyde Lewis; brother-in-law, Hoyt Headrick; and sister-in-law, Billie Skyles.

Survivors include his daughter, Sherry (Kenny) Kennedy; grandchildren, Kimie and Jeffrey; sister, Betty Headrick; sister-in-law, Pat Lewis; nieces, Lani Skyles and Leslie (Scott) Shepherd; nephews, Randy, Steve and Quinton (Tara) Skyles, Danny Roark, and Sam Lewis; and brother-in-law, Mickey (Joyce) Penland.

John Malone Jr.

John Malone Jr., 82, of Cape Coral, Fla., passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010.

He was born Jan. 26, 1927, in Athens, Tenn., and has been a Lee County resident since moving from Chattanooga in 1979. He retired from Charlotte County Ford-Lincoln-Mercury in 1990. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving in Japan and was an avid golfer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dessie Mae Burns Malone and John Henry Malone; sisters, Ruby Pace and Annie Patterson; brothers, Homer, Robert, James, T.R., Ross, Gene, Austin and Jack.

Mr. Malone is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary Ann Malone; his daughter, Vicki (Kurt) Stagmaier, of Signal Mountain, and John Todd Malone, of Chattanooga; his sisters, Lois Brock and Kate Erickson, both of Chattanooga, and Nell Gambill, of Athens; and his everyday sister-in-law, Helen C. Bartley, of Cape Coral; his grandchildren, Lauren (Chris) Shadrick, of Birmingham, Ala., Erin Stagmaier, of Washington, D.C., Zachary, Benjamin and Braxton Malone, all of Chattanooga; great grandson, Clark Stagmaier, of Birmingham; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Duane Houston of Clarksville, Tenn., officiating.

Cleo Matthews

Nancy Cleo Matthews, 91, of Hixson, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at a local hospital.

She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was retired from Dixie Yarns after 50 years of service. She was a member of the Ladies Bethany Class for many years, also a member of Monday School-Church Services at the Hamilton County Nursing Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marion E. and Mary Ann Layne; brothers, Ray Layne, John Layne, Calvin Layne; sisters, Violet London, Beatrice Poe, Mary Worley, Elizabeth Raines, Ruby Clayton, Mabel Clayton.

She is survived by her son, Larry (Teresa) Matthews; brother, David Marshall (Elsie) Layne; sister, Mildred Lenora Roberson; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Darryl Duggar officiating.

Interment will follow the service at Friendship Cemetery in Hixson.

Margaret McCullough

Margaret Brown McCullough, 90, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2010.

Born and raised on a farm on Sand Mountain in Alabama, Margaret spent most of her adult life in Chattanooga.

Margaret was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church. Margaret resided in Shepherd Hills where she and Stan built three homes and where she served as commissioner and mayor of the Ridgeside community she loved. Cooking was Margaret's specialty, and she was well-known for her pound cakes, cherry pies, cinnamon rolls and her barbecue ribs! She always had time to listen to her friends and loved ones and help with her quick wit and wisdom. She loved nature and could often be seen sitting in her window seat watching the birds and squirrels she fed every day and remarking how beautiful the world is.

She was a daughter of the late Russell and Annie Freeman Brown; the wife of the late Col. Stanley H. McCullough Jr.; and the mother of the late Stanley "Poo" McCullough.

She was also preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Ann and Paul Misura, Haleiwa, Hawaii; adopted daughter, Linda Spencer and friend Margaret Orr of Chattanooga; nephews, Russell (Kappi) Brown and William (Beverly) Brown, Trenton, Ga., and Jerry (Judy) Austin, Birmingham, Ala.; along with several great-nieces and nephews and many friends.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Weyland Stewart officiating.

Caroline M. O'Brien, 65, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at a local health care facility.

She was of the Church of Christ faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Idella Clevenger Jr.

Jerry Phelps Sr.

Jerry Phelps Sr., 60, of Chattanooga, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010.

He was preceded in death by parents, Chester and Jessie Phelps; siblings Mae Moss Johnson, Chester, Jasper and Willie Phelps.

He was a 1967 graduate of Riverside High School. He worked for Wheland Foundry for over 20 years.

Rita Diane Rose, 72, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at her home.

Rita was retired from Olan Mills and worked part time at Russell Stover. She was an avid Indy and NASCAR fan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Pearl Sibert.

Martha Schoenster

Martha Jane Fuller Schoenster, 90, a native of Chattanooga, and a devoted and loving sister, friend and aunt, died peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at her home.

She was a daughter of the late Edgar Romney and Clara Jolley Fuller and was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Peter J. Schoenster; her brother, James Harrison Fuller; a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Fuller Breon; and nephews, James Harrison Fuller Jr. and Thomas Edgar Fuller.

She was the great-niece of Capt. William Allen Fuller, conductor of the locomotive General and noted for his role in the 1862 Great Locomotive Chase during the American Civil War.

Mrs. Schoenster is survived by her sister, Margaret Fuller Fabiani, of Cleveland, Tenn.; nieces Marcia Breon Cavin, Debra Breon Van Voorst, Catherine Fuller Crawley, Martha Janice Fuller Page, Gina Fabiani Knox, Dorothy Fuller Polash; and by nephews, Richard Miller Breon Jr., Andrew Romney Breon, William J. Fabiani Jr.; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Schoenster was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Soddy-Daisy. She previously resided in Teaneck, N.J., Murfreesboro, Tenn., Mountain Home, Ark., Fort Smith, Ark., and Crossville, Tenn. She was very active on several committees and boards in the historic preservation of the Oaklands Mansion in Murfreesboro, the American Cancer Society for Rutherford County, Nashville Public Television and the Doberman Pinscher Club of America. She and her late husband, Peter, were dog fanciers and bred and showed Dobermans for many years. She was also a devoted member of various Wildlife and Animal Protection groups and, as an avid gardener, served as an officer and member of several garden clubs.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, at the East Chapel of the Chattanooga Funeral Home. Father Mike Creson of Holy Spirit Catholic Church officiated the service and interment was at Forest Hills Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Richard Miller Breon Jr., Andrew Romney Breon, William J. Fabiani Jr., Cullen E. "Trey" Cavin III, Cullen E. "Gene" Cavin Jr. and John W. Crawley.

Dr. Rick Seidel

Richard A. Seidel, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology at Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010.

Dr. Seidel was born Aug. 26, 1975. He was a graduate of Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.

Dr. Seidel was an accomplished teacher and scientist whose research has been shared in many presentations and publications.

Survivors include his wife, Irma Nocido Seidel; son, Hayden Seidel, both of Ooltewah; father and mother, David and Lynda Seidel, Dayton, Ohio; sister, Lesley Seidel Beckett, Faitfax, Va.

Johnny Shields

Johnny L. Shields, 76, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010.

A loyal husband, loving father and kind human being. He will be greatly missed. He was a member of the Brainerd Church of Christ.

Johnny was born in Chattanooga. During the Korean War he honorably served his country as a cryptological technician in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed as a draftsman and retired from Combustion Engineering.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Minnie and John Shields; three sisters, Nola, Sue, Edith; and his wife, Stella "Tootsie" Marie Shields (in 2003).

He is survived by two daughters, Julia Ann Shields and Nancy Darlene Jinks; one brother, Jackie L. Shields; one sister, Betty P. Blassingame; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Minister John Cupp, his close and longtime friend, conducted a private family service on Jan. 8, in the Legacy Funeral Home Chapel.

Interment followed in Chattanooga National Cemetery where he is buried with his wife.

June Stevens

June Stevens passed away on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at St. Barnabas Nursing Home. She was 98.

During her rich lifetime June moved to Oklahoma where she did electrical wiring on Lockheed's B-24 and B-25 Bombers on behalf of the war effort. From there she became a civilian worker on Oak Ridge's Manhattan Project. She had been an active member of Daisy United Methodist Church for many, many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Louhannah Stergil; and a husband, Joe; sister, Ruby; daughter, Evangeline; grandson Spooky; and great-grandson Jonathan.

She is survived by her son, Bill his wife, Jane; grandchildren, Tommy, Gwen, Kim, Tony, Phyllis and Alan; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, in the J. Avery Bryan Chapel.

Robert Summar

Robert W. Summar, a prominent attorney and longtime resident of Chattanooga, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010.

He was born in Old Hickory, Tenn., to the late Lindsay and Lucy Summar.

He was a veteran of the United States Army. He graduated from Middle Tennessee State University and he received his law degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. He served as assistant district attorney in Chattanooga from 1958 to 1965 and then he served as clerk master of Chancery Court in Hamilton County and he retired as clerk of the Supreme Court of Appeals in Knoxville. He was a member of Rivermont Golf Club.

He was preceded in death by infant son, Robert Summar Jr.; and a daughter, Leslie Goetz.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara Summar of Chattanooga; daughter, Lisa D'Andrea and her husband Tony D'Andrea, of Chattanooga; son, Robert W. Summar II and his wife, Johnna Summar, of Signal Mountain; son-in-law, Mark Goetz; eight grandchildren, John Lee Goetz, Ryan David Goetz, Alexandra Summar Goetz, Caroline Elizabeth D'Andrea, Katherine Summar D'Andrea, Annalisa Marie D'Andrea, Julia Margaret Summar and John Robert Summar.

Funeral services and interment will be announced.

MARIETTA -- Regina K. Andrews-Daniels, 61, left this world for her Heavenly home from Piedmont Hospital, Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, surrounded by her loving family.

Regina was born June 15, 1948, in Chattanooga to the late Thomas Andrews and Freddie Brown Andrews, who survives her.

Regina graduated from Lakeview High School (1966). She was a member of Central Baptist Church, Marietta, where Johnny is pastor and they have ministered together for the past eight years. Regina was a lovely Christian lady who loved everyone and was loved by everyone who knew her.

She is also survived by her loving husband of 41 years, the Rev. Johnny Daniels; son, the Rev. Jeffrey (Kim) Daniels; grandchildren, Nicole and Scott Daniels, of Rossville; brother, Ronnie (Ilene) Andrews, of Chattanooga; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Robert was a loving husband, father, brother and papaw who will be missed by all who knew him.

DALLAS, Texas -- The Rev. Lachlan Cumming Vass III passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2010.

A son of Lachlan C. Vass II and Frances Stedman Sharp, he was born Sept. 13, 1915, in the manse of Germantown Presbyterian Church, Germantown, Tenn. He grew up in Cartersville and Dalton, Ga., and St. Elmo, Chattanooga, where his father held pastorates. He graduated from City High School, Chattanooga, and cum laude from Davidson College. He received a bachelor of divinity from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, where he was awarded the Walter Kennedy Patterson Fellowship in New Testament Greek. Following his ordination as a Presbyterian minister, he married Winifred H. Kellersberger. In 1940, the Vasses were appointed missionaries with the American Presbyterian Congo Mission (APCM), where they served for 30 years. Lach was a third-generation Presbyterian minister, and both Lach and Winnie were second-generation missionaries in the Belgian Congo. During his tenure, Lach was director of the J. Leighton Wilson Printing Press and served as mission treasurer.

After retirement from the mission field, Lach joined the staff of Highland Park Presbyterian Church, Dallas, Texas, as assistant business manager until his retirement in 1983.

Lach was preceded in death by his brother, John; and his daughter, Sophie Fontaine Vass.

He is survived by his wife of almost 70 years and four daughters, Edna (John) Stucky, Moundridge, Kan., Julia Lake (William) Dudley, Signal Mountain, Tenn., Elizabeth (Reggie) Wilkerson, Laurens, S.C., and Winifred (Todd) Rutenbar, Richardson, Texas; sister, Sophie Simon, Kingston, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and devoted nieces and nephews.

Lach and Winnie have resided at Presbyterian Village North (PVN) since 1982. The family would like to express deep gratitude to the staff of PVN for their sensitive and caring ministry during recent months.
