Arson ruled out in fatal Nashville house fire that killed five

NASHVILLE - Officials say a fire at a Nashville duplex that killed five people including two children was not caused by arson, but the cause is still under investigation.

The fire started early Saturday morning at a two-story duplex, killing 50-year-old Tedarrel Brooks, his wife 32-year-old Stephanie Brooks and their daughters, 8-year-old T'Derrica and 4-year-old Alexis.

A family friend, 24-year-old Billy Vantrice Austin, was also killed. Two other children remain in the hospital.

Nashville Fire Department spokesman Walter Demonbreun told The Tennessean that arson has been ruled out. The house had smoke detectors, but they were not working.
