Dr. Ronald Free

CLEVELAND -- Dr. Ronald Free, 72, passed away early Thursday morning, March 4, 2010, in a local health care facility.

Dr. Free was the son of the late Inez Hixson Free and Bill Free. His brother, La Verne Free also preceded him in death.

Dr. Free was a graduate of Bradley Central High School and he was a member of the Bradley County Marching Band. He was the first Tuba Player the band ever had. He also served as Captain of the Band and President of the Student Body. Upon graduation in 1956, he was awarded a Music Scholarship to the Air Force Academy. Dr. Free graduated from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga with Bachelors in Engineering Physics. He completed graduate work at the University of Arizona and the University of Alabama. In the 1960s, Dr. Free worked as a senior project engineer for NASA contractors. He was primarily involved in the area of physical measurement systems and acquisition of data during testing for the Saturn program. He was also a senior project engineer for the Army Missile Command, developing state of the art measurement systems in collaboration with the National Bureau of Standards. He served in this capacity until 1970. Dr. Free also worked with the Johnson and Johnson Co. as a developmental independent contractor in collaboration with the orthopedic research laboratories at Columbia Medical School in the development of spinal contour analysis systems. This took Dr. Free career in a different path. He saw the possibilities for merging his skills in systems analysis and desire to help others individually in a new way. In 1973 he received his Doctor of Chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic. Drawing on his experience as an engineer, he intuitively applied his knowledge of "stress and strain" measurement systems for the Saturn Space Vehicle to the human system. Dr. Free had a rare understanding of the causes of pain, the body/mind correlation and the use of high-voltage physiotherapy as it pertains to orthopedic conditions and pain control.

Among his inventions is the Contour Spinal Analyzer-Moire Topography, High Voltage Subsensory Instrumentation and Piezoelectric Measurement Systems which was introduced at the Chiropractic Convention in Las Vegas, January of this year (2010). His many articles relating to patient care and treatment appeared in various publications including "Chiropractic Economics". He also presented a paper entitled "Topographical Analysis of the Human Spine" at the Symposium of Bio Imagery in Washington, DC in 1975. He was honored as Diplomate-Academy of Pain Management in 1991, as Fellow-Academy of Electro Medicine in 1985 and was given an Honorary Doctorate of Electro Medicine. For the past 20 years, he has served as Director of Free Chiropractic Centre, one of the largest chiropractic clinics in the southeastern United States. He was also a member of the Gideons International.

With all of his accomplishments, Dr. Free felt his greatest achievement was being able to relieve the pain that brought patients from across the country to his clinic. Dr. Free's caring and concern for his patients was most evident. His warmth and understanding, his ability to listen to patients and to grasp even the most elusive symptoms and to treat them sometimes made him the "doctor of last resort" for people who had been told their pain was untreatable or even imaginary. Dr. Free will be remembered by his patients as a dear friend, a trusted medical professional and most of all as a healer who shared his gift even when his own physical health was failing. Dr. Free was a faithful member of Mount Olive Church of God and a member of the Waymaker Sunday School Class.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Free, of Cleveland; his daughter, Dr. Angela St. John and her husband, Olan, his son, Ronald Christian "Chris" Free and his wife, Glenda; his grandchildren, Morgan St. John, Madeline Kay Free, Alexander Free and Oliver Free, all of Cleveland; his sisters-in-law, Evelyn Free and Jane Radford, both of Cleveland; his niece, Sabrina Holcomb and his nephews, Barry Radford and his wife, Mary Beth and Frank Free.
