Westland site named for veterans nursing home in Bradley

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - A 27-acre tract on Westland Drive in south Cleveland has been selected as the site of a future Southeast Tennessee veterans nursing home.

Members of the Tennessee State Veterans Home Board voted today after inspecting three potential sites on Wednesday. The board, a part of the Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs, oversees veterans homes in Tennessee.

"You know, as I do, that this is a 'win' site," said Joe Davis, Bradley County veterans service officer and a member of the state board.

Bob Tuke, chairman of the veterans home board, cautioned that the selection of a site doesn't mean that construction is imminent. He said no work can take place until the 65 percent federal funding share of the estimated $21 million cost is in place.

The property, which was donated by local families, is appraised at about $1 million, officials said today.

But Mr. Tuke said the selection means the VA's Real Property Administration can begin doing inspections, reviewing the title and looking at environmental issues.
