East Ridge standoff ends without injury

East Ridge SWAT team members and Chattanooga police negotiators talked an armed man into surrendering today after an hours-long standoff.

Police responded to 717 Summit Ave. after a 9 a.m. call reporting that a man there was threatening to harm himself.

Leondra P. Smith, 37, was armed with a .38 caliber handgun, according to a police news release.

He had no hostages and did not threaten police, said Officer Erik Hopkins, spokesman for East Ridge Police Department.

SWAT officers established a perimeter around the duplex as negotiators spoke with Mr. Smith.

At 12:15 p.m. Mr. Smith surrendered to police. He was taken to Parkridge East Hospital for a psychological evaluation and booked in the Hamilton County Jail on an assault charge, authorities said.
