HAMILTON COUNTY

Dorothy Brammer

Dorothy P. Brammer, Hamilton County's longest serving County Register, and a longtime leader in Armed Forces Week celebrations, died Saturday, May 1, 2010, at a local nursing home.

A lifelong Hamilton County resident, Mrs. Brammer was widowed in 1952 when attorney Shelby Brammer died while running for state senator. As a young mother of three children under 10, Mrs. Brammer ran for County Register in 1954 and won. She was re-elected to seven more four-year terms.

She ran on a platform of "courtesy and efficiency," keeping records up to date with a small staff and staying abreast of record-keeping innovations. Her office came in under budget 31 of 32 years, returning $4 million to taxpayers.

On her retirement in 1986, Mrs. Brammer was the dean of county office holders and was known as the "Grandmother of the Courthouse."

A noted patriot, Mrs. Brammer served as secretary of the Armed Forces Week Committee from 1955 to 1986. She said it was a year-round job but was "a way to say thank you for what service men and women had done for this country in keeping it free."

She received numerous awards and recognitions from the community and patriotic organizations including the Sertoma Freedom Award. She was a Sweetheart of Sigma Chi; was founder of the Tennessee Registers Association; served the United Way; was on the boards of the Girls Club, Salvation Army, Kidney Foundation and Bonny Oaks Foundation; and was a member of the Chattanooga Area Historical Association, the Democratic Women's Club and the Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge. She was a Red Cross volunteer at Parkridge Hospital.

She was a faithful Christian and active member of Brainerd Baptist Church, having formerly served at Westminster Presbyterian and Asbury United Methodist.

He began working at Prairie View A&M University, a historically Black college, in Prairie View, Texas, in 1987. He continued there until 1992 as associate professor of speech and coach of the speech team. From 1992-1995 Jeffrey took the opportunity to teach at West Virginia Wesleyan in Buckhannon, W.Va., and also began his doctoral studies in Communications at Ohio University.

During his tenure at Chattanooga State he taught public speaking, nonverbal communication and introduction to the theater and coached the speech team. Jeffrey was passionate about theater and enjoyed teaching others the art of public speaking.

Jeffrey's hobbies and interests included bicycling, tinkering on cars - especially his 1963 Cadillac - restoration of historic homes, listening to classical music and the theater arts. He enjoyed sewing and shared his gift by making costumes and articles of clothing for his wife and children.
