Police fatally shoot man on I-275

KNOXVILLE - Police fatally shot a man along Interstate 275 after he raised a handgun in their direction, a police spokesman said this morning.

The unidentified man had called the Knox County E-911 Center at 11:20 p.m. Thursday about a "shoot out in Halls" and threatened there would be another shoot out, according to Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk.

The same man called E-911 a few minutes later, described the vehicle he was driving and said he wanted to surrender.

DeBusk said an officer saw the vehicle on Central Avenue Pike near Merchants Road and tried to stop the driver. The driver did stop and got out with a handgun, but returned to the vehicle to continue north on Central Avenue Pike.
