David K. DaughteryA Bradley County man charged with murder in his wife's death is being held in Bryson City, N.C., and will be interviewed by detectives from Bradley today.
David Daugherty was arrested late Thursday afternoon when officers responded to a disturbance at a local motel, Bradley County Sheriff's Office spokesman Bob Gault said.
Authorities said Daugherty approached a woman, and when she turned to go inside a room he struck her with a stun gun, knocking her to the floor, Gault said. The woman's 8-year-old daughter ran to the office to call police, he said.
Daugherty ran away, but officers spotted him about 300 yards from the motel hiding in bushes, Gault said.
Bradley County sheriff's deputies had been searching for Daugherty since he was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, 40-year-old Elizabeth Carney.
Preliminary results of an autopsy show that she was strangled to death, Gault said.
Her body was found wrapped in blankets in a bedroom closet of their trailer in Cleveland, Tenn., an affidavit said.
Daugherty also is wanted in Swain County on a fugitive warrant, Gault said.
This morning he waived extradition to Tennessee and first will face his Swain County charge, Gault said.
