7.8 percent growth for Chattanooga since 2000 census but still smaller than Knoxville

Chattanooga grew by 7.8 percent since the 2000 census, but it is still 11,000 people behind Knoxville in its bid to be Tennessee No. 3 city.

According to U.S. Census Bureau data released today, Chattanooga's population stood at 167,674 people last year. Hamilton County grew by 9.3 percent over the same period to 336,463 residents.

Statewide, Memphis decreased by 0.5 percent since the 2000 Census, but Nashville-Davidson grew by 10 percent; Knoxville grew by 2.9 percent; and Clarksville grew by 28.5 percent.
