Dalton police warn against 'convincing' but fake $100 bills

The Dalton Police Department is investigating counterfeit $100 bills that were used at three local businesses.

Investigators warn that the bills are very hard to catch since they are printed as a 1985 series bill, which come without security features such as the transparent watermark that newer bills would have, said police spokesman Bruce Frazier.

The bills also pass a test with a counterfeit marker, indicating that they are printed on actual bills which have been washed out and re-printed with a $100 bill.

"Each bill is very convincing," Frazier said.

The bills were used last Thursday and Friday at Gondolier Pizza on Thornton Avenue, La Bendicion Pupuseria Salvadorena on Smith Industrial Boulevard and the Rite Aid Pharmacy at 1320 Glenwood Ave., Frazier said.

Cashiers at the restaurants were able to list a suspect after later determining that the bills were counterfeit.

At both the restaurants, a man paid with a fake $100 bill and left after collecting his change. In both instances, he told cashiers that he would return to pick up his food, but never did.

The suspect was described in both cases as a slim black male about 5 feet 9 with braided hair.

The three counterfeit $100 bills are identical with the same serial number, E51485287A.

One of the bills is rough to the touch on the back, and appears to be fraying slightly from being washed.

Anyone with information in this case may contact Detective Greg Bates at 706-278-9085, ext. 137.
