Jeremy Lane enters Judge Don Poole's courtroom.A 27-year-old Chattanooga man had his initial parole hearing this morning, less than a year after he was sentenced for killing a Unum employee with his car while she crossed the road to work.
Jeremy Allen Lane faced a member of the Tennessee Board of Probation and Parole this morning via video conference from his home at the Morgan County Correctional Complex.
Wood's brother said the parole official recommended Lane not be granted parole or further parole hearings and serve the remaining five years of his sentence in state prison.
Last May, Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Don Poole sentenced Lane to seven years after a jury found the man guilty of vehicular homicide and related charges in the death of Susan Wood, 42, on Dec. 23, 2009.
Lane has served more than two years after receiving credit for pre-trial jail time and was scheduled for his initial parole hearing today.
Wood's brother Steve Berry attended the hour-long parole hearing, also via video conference from Chattanooga, with his sister and Wood's husband. Berry told the Times Free Press that Lane answered questions from the parole official and read a prepared statement. Lane asked to be paroled, his mother, father and stepfather spoke on his behalf from the prison, Berry said.
Berry said state officials told him it would be three to four weeks before the rest of the board reviewed the official's decision and that Lane would have a chance to appeal if they deny his parole request.
