Red Bank commissioners elected former Vice Mayor John Roberts as the city's new mayor Tuesday night and chose Commissioner Floy Pierce as vice mayor.

"I feel honored," Roberts said. "I see a lot of changes for our city for the better."

Roberts takes the helm from former Mayor Monty Millard, who was defeated by Rick Causer in the November election. Causer, Eddie Pierce and Kenneth Welch were sworn in as commissioners at Tuesday night's meeting.

Roberts said he thinks the new group of commissioners will be efficient in handling city issues.

"I don't think there's a person on the board that we won't work well with," he said. "We will have our disagreements, but I think 95 percent of the time we will agree. Of course we'll have that 5 percent we won't agree on."

While the mayor holds only one vote on the commission -- just like every other commissioner -- Vice Mayor Floy Pierce said the title is a sign of respect and leadership. She's glad Roberts secured the post.

"I think he's the best choice, and he works hard," she said.

Roberts said he hopes to update the city's residential code book, which hasn't been done for nearly 40 years, and continue to bring new businesses to Red Bank.

Roberts will be Red Bank's mayor for two years, when he'll be up for re-election.
