Red Bank's old middle school open to tour tonight

photo The Red Bank Middle School gymnasium is in a separate building from the school and faces Dayton Boulevard. Local architects have proposed that the building be converted into a new Red Bank city hall.

As Red Bank commissioners near their decision about what to do with do with Red Bank's old middle school buildings, city residents are invited to participate in the process.

The school, which is more than 70 years old and was once home to the city's high school, will be open from 5 to 6 p.m. today for residents to tour.

The structures, located at 3117 Dayton Blvd., will be torn down once the new middle school on Morrison Springs Road is finished, unless commissioners seize on one local architect's idea to turn the buildings into a new city hall complex.

Red Bank has long outgrown its current city hall on Dayton Boulevard and has commissioned drawings for a two-story building that could be built on a small plot of land beside the current city hall.

Vance Travis with TWH Architects - the firm that has designed both the new city hall rendering and Red Bank's new middle school - has made the case that the city could refurbish the old middle school gym and theater for a new town center while preserving a part of Red Bank history.

"We're just interested in seeing how many Red Bank citizens even show up," said Mayor Monty Millard.

Commissioners plan to hold a public hearing about the buildings on Oct. 30.
