Calhoun, Ga., gets water plant loan

The Georgia Environmental Finance Authority awarded Calhoun, Ga., a $6.94 million loan Tuesday from its drinking water state revolving fund.

The loan will finance upgrades at the Maultin Road Water Treatment Plant. In return, the city will pay 1.21 percent interest on the 20-year loan.

"The projects that we agreed to finance today demonstrate that GEFA is investing in communities that are willing to invest in themselves," said Gary McCollough, chairman of the organization's board of directors and mayor of Dahlonega, Ga.

According to a news release, the money will be used to replace Calhoun's flash mix system, refurbish concrete sedimentation basins, replace sludge collectors and settlers and construct a high-service pump station.

About $1.45 million of the loan will be applied to water conservation initiatives.

In the last seven years, GEFA has financed more than $79 million in water efficiency and conservation projects.
