Deputy resigns amid probe
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - A Bradley County sheriff's deputy has resigned amid an internal investigation.
Former deputy Casey Kerr quit about three weeks ago after he hit a deer while driving a patrol vehicle, sheriff's office spokesman Bob Gault said Friday. Gault wasn't sure when Kerr hit the deer, but he said it was probably in early January.
The sheriff's office launched the investigation soon after Kerr's crash, and it is still under way even though he resigned.
Gault would not say what specifically his office is looking into. He also said he doesn't know whether Kerr was on duty during the crash.
Man charged in battery thefts
David Keith Farris Jr., known as D.J., was arrested in Birchwood on Friday after having been sought by Bradley County sheriff's detectives and the Cleveland police after a number of battery thefts at businesses and construction sites.
A news release from the Bradley County Sheriff's Office said Farris, 35, had been traced to his parents' home. He was taken into custody without incident, the release said.
He was taken to the Hamilton County Jail and will be held on warrants filed in Bradley and Meigs counties.
Last November the Bradley County Sheriff's Office filed charges on two counts of theft of more than $1,000 in batteries at J and J Marine on Georgetown Road and a Holloway Road construction site.
The release said the Cleveland Police Department had filed added theft charges relating to its investigation.
Car chase leads to drug arrest
DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. - The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office has reported that a car chase in Ider, Ala., led to the arrest of two men when officials said they found a meth lab and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.
Sheriff Jimmy Harris said a suspicious vehicle was spotted on County Road 141, and when Chief Eric Watkins tried to stop it the driver fled at a high rate of speed.
The vehicle went off the road and wrecked, but Watkins arrested passenger Daniel Dewayne Anderson Jr., 25, of Flat Rock, Ala., while the driver fled.
Anderson was charged with unlawful manufacturing of controlled substance second and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, Harris said.
Watkins identified the driver, and DeKalb County deputies found Dustin Shae Roberts, 26, of Higdon, Ala., on County Road 155 and arrested him.
Roberts is charged with unlawful manufacturing of controlled substance second, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless endangerment, eluding police and numerous traffic offenses.
Roberts and Anderson were taken to the DeKalb County Detention Center, where they awaited bonds Friday night.
