NASHVILLE - Senators this evening overwhelmingly approved a bill letting Tennessee's 370,000 handgun-carry permit holders store firearms in vehicles parked on almost all public and privately own lots, despite owners or employers wishes.

The legislation, sponsored by Republican Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey, passed 28-5.

Businesses, including Volkswagen, have raised concerns about safety and infringement on their private property rights.

Members of the House Civil Justice Subcommittee are expected to take up the bill on Wednesday.
