Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers will continue an aggressive traffic enforcement campaign through March on Interstate 75.

The campaign, dubbed "Operation Stay Alive on I-75," will focus on traffic violators after statistics showed there was an increase in crashes and fatalities on the interstate, according to a news release.

In the Chattanooga highway patrol district, which includes 12 counties, there are 59 miles of I-75 for troopers to patrol during the campaign that kicked off in January.

Troopers will be positioned at every truck stop on the interstate in the district to educate commercial drivers as well as at the Athens rest area to hand out safety information to motorists on March 13 and March 14, Lt. John Harmon said in the news release. Today marks the second day of the February enforcement period.

Some troopers also will be stationed at ramps to interact with drivers and hand out safety literature.

During a two-day enforcement period in January, local troopers conducted 177 commercial vehicle safety inspections, assisted eight motorists, investigated two crashes, issued 283 citations to noncommercial vehicles, issued 54 commercial citations and handed out 22 warnings, Harmon said in the release.
