Beaver Pond Trail walk set Saturday
FORT PAYNE, Ala. - Little River Canyon National Preserve will host a nature walk Saturday to explore the 1.8 mile Beaver Pond Trail.
The free walk, from 10 a.m. to noon, will provide outdoor exercise on an easy to moderate trail while seeing some of the natural features, Ranger Larry Beane said in a news release.
Beavers built a pond that has moved several times in the last two decades, Beane said.
To participate, meet Beane at Lynn Overlook, about a mile south of Highway 35 on Highway 176. Bring water, good hiking shoes and field guides.

Five apply for judicial post
SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. - Five attorneys have applied to fill a vacancy created when a judge who heard cases in four Tennessee counties retired.
Tennessee's Judicial Nominating Commission will hold a public meeting at 9 a.m. on March 8 at the Blue Ribbon Circle Club/Celebration Grounds in Shelbyville to interview the candidates.
The Shelbyville Times-Gazette reported that solo practitioner Forest A. Durard Jr., of Shelbyville; Assistant District Attorney General Brooke Charles Grubb, of Fayetteville; Barbara G. Medley, of Lewisburg; John Harvey Norton, of Shelbyville; and Michael Randles, a 17th Judicial District assistant district attorney in Lewisburg, applied for the spot.
The position came open with the retirement of Judge Robert Crigler, who leaves the bench May 31.
The 17th Judicial District serves Bedford, Lincoln, Marshall and Moore counties.
Church destroyed in fire Sunday
COLLINS, Ga. - State fire investigators with the office of Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens' office are looking into an early morning church fire in Tattnall County.
Investigators said in a news release that Collins Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in Collins was destroyed by the fire. The blaze was reported about 6:30 a.m. Sunday, fire investigators said.
Investigators said the fire was reported by a neighbor. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
Man killed during police pursuit
LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ala. - A Danville, Ala., man was killed after crashing a vehicle while being chased by law enforcement officers.
The website al.com reported Gregory Johnson, 30, died when his vehicle hit a tree and he was ejected. His 5-year-old daughter was in the car but police said she didn't suffer life-threatening injuries.
State troopers told al.com the chase began after a traffic stop Saturday night.
Officers briefly lost track of the vehicle, but soon saw tire tracks going off the road and discovered the wreck site.
