Coca-Cola bottles to mark civil rights era

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Coca-Cola officials say they're releasing a limited-edition glass bottle in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the civil rights events of 1963.

The Atlanta-based company made the announcement Monday in Birmingham, where several key events of the civil rights era took place.

The Birmingham News reports that the bottles will be available only in Birmingham initially. They list seven cities in which key events in the movement took place. At the center of the list the bottle reads: Civil Rights Movement - 1963 - 50 - 2013 - Birmingham, Alabama."

Coca-Cola said in a statement that it's honoring a movement that began in Birmingham and changed the world.

The commemorative bottles will be available in Birmingham stores starting July 1 and elsewhere over the next several months.
