Man charged with sex abuse

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. - A 45-year-old Scottsboro man has been arrested and charged with sexual abuse of a child under 12, a news release states.

DeKalb County Sheriff's Office investigators determined John Wesley Manning had sexual contact with a 4-year-old girl, and they began to follow leads that led to Jackson and Marshall counties, Sheriff Jimmy Harris said in the release.

Manning was booked into the DeKalb County Detention Center on $15,000 bond.

Harris said the investigation is continuing and more charges are possible.

"It is very unfortunate that we see cases like this," Harris said. "It strikes at the heart of every person, especially parents and grandparents. I hope to see this case completed as soon as possible and pray for the victims as they try to get past this terrible act."

400 eye seats on DeKalb board

ATLANTA - More than 400 people have applied for positions on the beleaguered DeKalb County school board after Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal removed two-thirds of its members.

Wednesday was the deadline for applications to the board for the metro Atlanta school system. A federal judge on Monday allowed the governor's removal of six of the nine school board members, although legal questions remain.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Deal, under pressure to get the vacant positions filled fast, promised that the process would not be "weeks-long."

DeKalb County, Georgia's third-largest school district, was put on probation in December by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools after a six-month investigation.

The accreditation agency cited long-term problems including nepotism, fiscal mismanagement, inappropriate micromanagement and intimidation within the district.

Agent shoots, kills porn suspect

NEW MARKET, Tenn. - The FBI says an agent was involved in a fatal shooting during an East Tennessee child pornography investigation.

In a news release from the Knoxville office, Special Agent Kelly Kindness said the shooting happened Wednesday in New Market when agents tried to serve an arrest warrant.

Kindness said the subject died from the wounds and the FBI is reviewing the shooting.

The FBI news release did not name the victim or the agent. Federal court documents in the child porn case indicate that Scott Edward Evans, of New Market, has died. Evans was charged Monday with electronically sending and receiving sexually explicit images of minors.

WATE-TV reported the road to Evans' home was blocked for several hours Wednesday and again Thursday as agents investigated.
