Husband dead; wife, daughter wounded in shooting near Puryear, Tenn.

PURYEAR, Tenn. - Henry County authorities say a pending divorce was the apparent motivation for a triple shooting that left the husband dead.

Sheriff Monte Belew told The Paris Post-Intelligencer (http://bit.ly/YUhyfG ) John Baxter, 72, shot his 66-year-old wife, Virginia Baxter, and the couple's daughter before fatally shooting himself. Belew said the younger woman is 46-year-old Katherine Oloughlin.

The shooting occurred just before 2 p.m. Monday at the family home near Puryear.

Oloughlin was taken by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville and Virginia Baxter was initially taken to Henry County Medical Center in Paris.

No information was available from Vanderbilt today. A family member said Monday that both women were in stable condition.

Belew said Oloughlin was able to go to a relative's home nearby for help, even though she had been shot multiple times.

The sheriff said the argument was over which partner would keep a car title after the divorce. He said James Baxter used a .22-caliber handgun and a .357 derringer in the shooting.
