Drag racing Montgomery, Ala., officer to be reinstated

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Montgomery police say an officer who resigned after he was recorded drag racing on a department motorcycle will be reinstated to his position.

Department spokeswoman Martha Earnhardt confirmed the officer's reinstatement to the Montgomery Advertiser Thursday.

Another motorcyclist challenged the officer to a race and recorded the incident on a camera that was mounted to his helmet.

The footage was eventually posted on the Internet.

WSFA-TV reported that Murphy told those who gathered for a press conference that the city attorney told him there wasn't sufficient evidence to move forward with firing the officer.

The station also reports the cyclist who challenged the officer to a race started a petition to have him reinstated.

The officer issued an apology for the incident and Murphy says he will face disciplinary action.
