A two story home built in the 1800s was destroyed by fire in Sale Creek Monday night.

At 9 p.m., a homeowner called 911 about the fire at 111 Griffith Street.

Homeowner Christopher Breedlove told officials today was the first day he used his wood stove since last winter. After starting his wood stove, he went to bed and awoke to the smell of heavy smoke. Once he got up to investigate the origin of smoke, he saw fire going up the side wall adjacent to the wood stove.

Breedlove and his wife escaped without injury.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and will be under investigation by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office. The house is a total loss and valued at $40,000.

The American Red Cross was notified to assist the Breedloves.
