A state lawmaker says he failed to reach a compromise with Alabama conservation officials over a proposed game rule affecting as many as 250,000 hunters.
That means legislators could intervene just before the opening of fall deer season next month.
State Sen. Paul Sanford of Huntsville says conservation leaders appear unwilling to make changes to a proposed rule that would require hunters to report details about deer or turkey kills to the state within 24 hours.
Sanford said Conservation Commissioner Gunter Guy wasn't open to changes during a meeting Thursday, so Sanford likely will ask fellow lawmakers to make the requirements less restrictive.
Guy says he's disappointed in the lack of a compromise, and he will ask legislators to preserve the program as designed.
