Alleged drunk driver kills Houston autistic boy

HOUSTON - Authorities say a 12-year-old autistic boy was killed instantly when a truck driven by a man who was allegedly drunk hit him as he rode his bicycle along a high-speed overpass in southwest Houston.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Alvester Bowens had been reported missing after he separated from his father hours earlier during a bike ride Saturday.

Houston Police Department officer A. Michon said the child was in the middle of the freeway when he was struck by the Ford F-150 truck driven by Gilberto Aguirre.

Aguirre showed signs of being intoxicated, but police say the crash may have still been unavoidable.

He has been charged with intoxicated driving, and the Harris County District Attorney has yet to decide whether to also bring manslaughter charges.
