Two Monroe County, Tenn., inmates escaped Thursday afternoon in a vehicle stolen from the site where they worked as trusties.
Tony Joe Carroll and Ricky Burnette were working at the Madisonville Convenience Center on Industrial Drive when they stole a gold car and escaped, according to Tommy Jones, former day-shift patrol sergeant for the sheriff's office.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office declined to provide any information about the escape, but Jones said other law enforcement agencies were alerted.
Jones said a sergeant in the sheriff's office told him about the incident and confirmed that it was Greg Hunt's car that was stolen. Hunt was the man who transported the two inmates to and from the jail and the work site.
Contacted at home, Hunt said he could not comment.
Carroll was jailed on charges of theft, vandalism, auto burglary, destruction of valuable papers, and was previously convicted of felony fleeing. Burnette was jailed on charges of driving with a suspended license, manufacture of Schedule II drugs, drug paraphernalia and violation of parole.
The two men are still on the run, and authorities ask that anyone with information in the case call 423-442-3911 or 423-442-4357.
