National parks in AL attract nearly 718,000

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A new report from the National Park Service says the national parks in Alabama had nearly 718,000 visitors in 2012.

The park service estimates the visitors spent $26.5 million.

The national parks in Alabama are Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, Russell Cave National Monument, Little River Canyon National Preserve, Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site, Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, and portions of the Natchez Trace Parkway.

The southeast regional director for the park service, Stan Austin, says the national parks in Alabama immerse visitors in the struggles of American Indians at Horseshoe Bend and Russell Cave, triumphs of African-Americans in Tuskegee, and the wilds of Little River Canyon.
