A man who was lost and unable to climb out of Pettyjohn's Cave in Walker County earlier this morning was successfully rescued, Fire Chief Randy Camp said.

Three locals had gone into the cave around 6 p.m. yesterday. Upon reaching a wall of about seven or eight feet that they needed to climb, Camp said one of the men was too exhausted to make the climb. Another member of the group climbed out and left the cave to call 911, at approximately 1:05 a.m.

Camp said the rescue took about four and a half hours to complete, but that once the man was pulled over the wall, he was able to walk the rest of the way out of the cave. No injuries were sustained.

Rescue crews respond to about five rescue calls at Pettyjohn's Cave every year, Camp said.
