St. Elmo house burns

Public Works crews had to spread salt and sand in the St. Elmo area this morning because of freezing water runoff from firefighters fighting a blaze.

There were no injuries from the fire at 4611 Tennessee Avenue, said Bruce Garner, a spokesman for the Chattanooga Fire Department.

Firefighters received the alarm at 6:45 a.m. The cause of the fire was unknown this morning, Garner said.

Heavy smoke was visible when firefighters first arrived, and they managed to save about 50 percent of the house from fire damage, Garner said.

Tennessee Avenue was closed while the fire was put out but was expected to reopen by this afternoon, Garner said.
