NASHVILLE -- A woman has died after a blaze swept through an apartment building in north Nashville damaging eight units.

Nashville Fire Department spokesman Brian Haas told media that fire crews responded early Tuesday to the blaze at Haynes Gardens apartments and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.

He said a young girl told firefighters that her grandmother was still inside, and they were able to get the woman out, but she died later at a hospital. Police identified her as 55-year-old Pernessa Thompson and said her death was accidental.

Haas said there were fire alarms in the apartments, but he wasn't sure about a sprinkler system.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
