Officials said a 12-year-old boy fatally shot an 11-year-old classmate in southern Tennessee.

Franklin County Sheriff's Office spokesman Chris Guess said Monday that Sienna Dusk Owens of Decherd was shot in the back Saturday in the garage of the boy's home in Estill Springs.

Guess said investigators are gathering evidence and will present findings to the district attorney, who will decide whether to pursue charges.

He said the boy's mother was home when the shooting occurred.

Guess said first responders found the girl alive and performed CPR.

The girl was taken to Southern Tennessee Medical Center in Winchester, Tenn., where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body was taken to Nashville for examination, officials said.

Sheriff Tim Fuller said more will be known after results of an autopsy are known and the investigation completed.

According to online obituary information on the Moore-Cortner Funeral Home website, Sienna was a North Middle School student who participated in soccer, cheerleading, basketball and track. Sienna is survived by three sisters and two brothers, as well as her parents and grandparents. Her funeral is set for Wednesday.

Sheriff Fuller said counselors were on hand at the school Monday morning to talk with Sienna's schoolmates and friends in the wake of the tragedy.

According to authorities, officers found the girl around 6:30 p.m. CST Friday in a garage at 127 Honey Lane with a gunshot wound in her upper left back. Officials at the scene performed CPR until medical personnel arrived, Sheriff Fuller said.
