What began as an argument over beer turned into forced captivity, an escape and an attempted murder, Alabama police say.

It all began when Dewey Lee Parris, 46, came over to see Gregory Britt, 25, at home. Parris asked the younger man to take him to the beer store, according to a statement released by DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris.

When Britt declined, they began to argue, Harris said.

The argument escalated until Parris whipped Britt in the head and face with a pistol, according to police. He then held Britt against his will.

After an hour and a half as a prisoner in his own house, Britt managed to escape captivity and fled from his home, but Parris spotted the fleeing man, aimed his pistol and opened fire.

As Parris fired, a round hit Britt in the hip, and another struck a nearby camper with two occupants inside, though neither was injured.

Parris himself then fled the scene, but was apprehended at 3:45 a.m. and charged with attempted murder and discharging a firearm in an occupied dwelling.

Parris told investigators the shooting was in self-defense.

Though Britt was released this morning from Marshall Medical South, Parris remains confined to the Dekalb County Detention Center. No bond has been set.

Both the Crossville Police Department and Geraldine Police Department responded to the scene and secured it until more deputies and investigators could arrive, Harris said.

"We are glad that our investigators made a quick arrest on this incident and Britt did not receive any life threatening injuries," Harris said.
