Man charged with attempted murder in local knife attack

A 35-year-old man was charged with attempted first-degree murder after police say he attacked the mother of his child with a knife around 4:45 p.m. Friday.

According to the affidavit, DeJuan Stephens attacked Octavia Williams, 27, when Williams dropped off their child for Stephens to take.

When police arrived at a house on Cameron Lane in Brainerd, Williams was covered in blood from two deep cuts on her face and neck.

She told police that she and Stephens got into an argument while their child was still in Williams' car. Stephens opened the car door, pulled out their child and then slammed the door shut again -- closing it on the hand of Williams' other child, who was still in the car.

Williams said she got angry and kicked Stephens' car, then he lunged at her, knocked her to the ground and put his hands around her throat. He told her he was going to kill her and then he cut her, Williams said.

Stephens told police that Williams hit him and that he pulled the knife in self-defense. He also told police multiple times that he "should have killed that [expletive]," according to the affidavit.

In addition to attempted first-degree murder, Stephens was charged with aggravated assault and booked into the Hamilton County Jail, where he is still in custody on a $125,000 bond.
