With temperatures dipping below freezing at night and the Chattanooga Community Kitchen at capacity, The Salvation Army will open its doors for overnight emergency shelter for the homeless at 6 p.m. today and Saturday.

The ReCreate Café, The Salvation Army's day center at 800 McCallie Ave., will be open through the night and as a day shelter Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to a news release.

The Community Kitchen has been averaging 120 people a night, director Jens Christense said in the release.

The Salvation Army can use volunteers and donations to cope with emergency needs, said Maj. Algerome Newsome.

"We need coffee, creamer and travel-size toiletry items for the shelter. Also, our supply of new heaters for low-income home owners is drastically low."

To volunteer, email Stacey_Crisp@uss.salvationarmy.org or call 423-505-1052.
