Earlier story:

There's no rest for the weary.

Still reeling from last week's winter storm, the Chattanooga area is expected to get hit with another snowstorm today that will bring as much as 4 inches to the city and 6 inches to northern Alabama and parts of north Georgia.

Area schools have been closed five out of the last six school days, and late Tuesday afternoon, districts were already beginning to cancel classes for today.

A winter storm watch is in effect for the Chattanooga area starting this afternoon through Thursday morning, with expected accumulations of 3-6 inches. Derek Eisentrout, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Morristown, Tenn., said Chattanooga could see 3-4 inches of snow.

Winter storm warnings have been issued out of the Huntsville, Ala., and Peachtree City, Ga., National Weather Service offices. Tim Troutman, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Huntsville, said the bad weather could start as early as noon today.

"It should start as light rain, sleet and snow, and then quickly transition to heavy snow in the early evening hours," Troutman said.

The snow should taper off by midnight, he said, but low temperatures in the early morning hours Thursday could cause leftover moisture to freeze.

A high in the mid- to upper-30s is expected Thursday and Friday, warming to the mid-40s on Saturday.

Today's snowfall arrives on the heels of last week's winter storm, which knocked out power to thousands, canceled school for days on end and left three area men dead of apparent hypothermia.

Due to the glut of cancellations last week, many schools face the possibility of tacking on makeup days at the end of the year. Five of Hamilton County Schools' six cancellations occurred in the past week.

Lee McDade, assistant superintendent for Hamilton County Schools, said the county has just three more snow days built into the schedule before they have to start adding days. While he would like to have those reserved in case of severe spring weather, he said the well-being of students, faculty and staff takes priority.

"We'd like to save those if we can, but we're not going to save them at the risk of safety," McDade said.

David Dickerson, director of schools for Grundy County, said the county has exhausted its 10-day allotment of snow days, but like McDade, said the situation is pretty much out of their hands.

"We'll take what comes, and make decisions based on the safety of our students," Dickerson said.

Though the area has been saddled with winter weather for several days now, meteorologist Troutman encourages people to heed the warnings in effect and use caution the next few days.

"There's likely to be severe winter weather, so only travel if you absolutely have to, and if you do, have a flashlight, some food, and a blanket or warm clothing in your car in case you get stranded," Troutman said.
