School delays

A number of school systems in Tennessee and Alabama will be on a delayed schedule tomorrow due to the cold temperatures, others are still waiting to make a decision and some have canceled Thursday classes altogether.

In Hamilton County, schools will be on a two-hour delay Thursday.

"We want everyone in the daylight," Superintendent Rick Smith said. "The sun will help us tomorrow."

In Grundy County, schools will dismiss at 1 p.m. today and officials there have called off Thursday classes. Polk County students also will stay home on Thursday.

Bledsoe County officials called off school today and school officials in Marion and Sequatchie will make a decision later today on classes for tomorrow, officials said.

Bledsoe County Director of Schools Jennifer Terry said a dusting of snow this morning made the roads at higher elevations slippery so officials decided to let children stay at home.

"We're still looking at tomorrow," she said, noting that Bledsoe County, like many others, has children as young as four riding buses.

Elsewhere Thursday, Tennessee's Bradley County and Cleveland City schools will be on a two-hour delay.

In Alabama, DeKalb County schools will be on a three-hour delay and Jackson County Schools will be on a two-hour delay with students reporting at 10 a.m. CST and staff reporting at 9 a.m. CST, officials said.

In Georgia, Catoosa County Schools will be on a two-hour delay Thursday, according to spokeswoman Marissa Brower. Whitfield County Schools, Dalton Public Schools and Walker County Schools will be on a two-hour delay as well. Officials in Dade County were still weighing options at 9:45 a.m.

Other delays

Walker County government offices will be on a two-hour delay Jan. 8 because of low temperatures. This does not include Magistrate Court. Walker County Transit Services will operate on a 2 hour delay. Two-hour delay on Thursday in Sequatchie County and Marion County. Hamilton County Government offices will open at regular times on Thursday.
