A Hamilton County man and his girlfriend have been charged with attempted murder after investigators say they started a fire at the man's mother's house in an effort to kill her.

Johnny Shouse and Gladys George have been charged with attempted first-degree murder and and aggravated arson. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office alleges they set fire to Shouse's mother's house at 8528 Ooltewah-Georgetown Road on Jan. 6, spokeswoman Georgia Short said.

Shouse and George turned themselves in to law enforcement in Shreveport, La., on Jan. 8, and both remain in custody.

Judge Gary Starnes set their bonds at $3 million each, according to Short.
