Former Murray County Magistrate Bryant Cochran has been sentenced to five years in prison.

It happened in US District Court today.

The GBI and FBI investigated Bryant Cochran on allegations that he orchestrated a woman's faulty arrest in August 2012.

The woman, Angela Garmley, a methamphetamine addict, had accused Cochran of sexually harassing her when she asked him to issue warrants.

The Murray County Sheriff's Office then arrested Garmley after finding drugs under her car.

A jury found in December that Cochran told someone to plant those drugs, then told police to find them. He was convicted on six counts.

This morning, US District Court Judge Harold Murphy told Cochran he "absolutely damaged" the reputation of Murray County courts.

Cochran walked away with his family today. He will turn himself in to a prison in Pensacola, Fla., at a later date.

Cochran's attorney, Page Pate, will file an appeal in this case. He already filed a notice of appeal in US District Court.

After five years in prison, judge Murphy ruled, Cochran will be on probation for three years.
